You're in your room pretending to study when all of a sudden you buddy calls up asking if you want to sporadically go star tipping on the beach or go shagging on top of a parking garage, do you go or stay regretting your decision? Spontaneous moments like this happen all the time while in college and I can say that some of my fondest memories in college so far had no planning whatsoever.
Just the other day, there was a planned shag/swing dance supposed to go down on top of a parking garage when it was about to be canceled because the city did not approve. As a last minute change, we took it to my house 30 minutes outside the city and ended up having a great night filled with flips and new friendships. This article is an example of not planning. I literally became a writer for Odyssey yesterday afternoon and found out I had to have an article ready in less than 24 hours. So this article is literally coming straight out of my head on my friend's computer on low battery after being at the beach for a few hours.
Now don't get me wrong: there can be overkill on being spontaneous, and I have dealt with the consequences of being too random. But being spontaneous is a great thing. Without being spontaneous I wouldn't be doing a lot of things that are now a part of my everyday life. But if I could give any small bit of wisdom I have learned in my vast lifetime, I would say that I have learned how to be able to plan and be prepared for being spontaneous. What does this mean is something you may or may not be asking if you have made it this far down into the article. It means something such as I always keep a pair of board shorts and towel in my car during the spring and summer if anyone calls me for a last minute beach or boat day. It is kind of like being on the defense side during a football game. You prepare for what the offense might do, but you are not exactly sure what is going to happen and you play it by ear. Being prepared for spontaneity would be like the bow and the arrows are sporadic memories in the making. An arrow can still be useful and effective without the bow, but it can't be used to its full potential unless it is used with a bow and the better the archer is the more effective the arrow is. This is the same on how you can be with sporadic events and making lifetime memories while in college.
Thanks for reading my first article and the song/album. I am jamming out this week is "Songs in the Night" by The Gray Havens on their album Fire and Stone.
Cheers,
