Preparing For College

Is one ever ready for the real world?

College. Something so many people do not like to talk about, and dread. However, I feel that it is important to discuss the elephant in the room, and talk about what you should do to prepare yourself to go out into the real world. It might seem scary, but everyone has to do it at some point.

1. Falling in love with a school:

Obviously, this is a pretty big one. Finding a school that you absolutely love might seem life a big feat, since there are so many different school options out there, but trust me, when you know, you know.

2. Working your academic life around the school:

For example, when I was working on my transcript for my school, I researched what that specific school looks for in a perspective student and made sure I incorporated some of those things in my life. Schools love to see not only your academic life, but also everything you are doing outside of academics, including volunteering, clubs and sports.

3. Visiting that school:

College tours are so important in the college decision and should definitely be something that you partake in. I toured about five schools before I fell in love with one, and I am so thankful that I did. I went with the college that I felt most at home at. Going somewhere that you feel comfortable is the most important thing.

4. Contacting your recruiter:

No, not your military recruiter, unless you plan on joining the military, power to you. Each college has a recruiter for your area. It is crucial to be in contact with your recruiter as much as possible. They will truly be your best friend during application season, and even while you are in college.

5. Application season:

Honestly, the most stressful thing you will go through in your entire high school life. I personally did not have to stress too much, as I only applied to one school, and got into that school. I was prepared to be incredibly stressed this season, and since I was not, I figured I would share my secrets on how to cope with that stress. I applied to my school back in July when their applications opened, I suggest applying to a school within the first few weeks of the applications opening. A main reason for getting a deferred application is because they either ran out of space, or they have other applicants that could offer more. Dealing with a deferred application can be hard, especially if it is your dream school, but that is what back up schools are for!

6. Dorm shopping:

I already started my dorm shopping experience. I found my roommates already and started to coordinate our suite layout. Once you fully commit to a school, start researching dorm checklists and find out everything you need for your dorm. Make sure you check with your school, or your dorm hall to see what is allowed and what is not!

College is a time of fun. A time that should be celebrated. Remember to have fun during this time and enjoy the time that you have in high school while you still can!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
