5 Ways To Prepare For College Graduation

In This Article:

Graduation is an exciting day: the confetti, the flowers, the motivational speeches, the cheers.

But as soon as you turn in your robe, real life begins. And the day can go from exciting to terrifying.

However, it doesn't have to be that way. Here are five tips to make life after graduation the best years of your life.

1. Get your resume in order.

Your number one priority before graduation should be getting your resume in order.

Some tips for impressing employers:

1. Keep it simple. Don't add too much fluff or a plethora of skills that take up a lot of space. Only list what's relevant to your profession.

2. Use bullet points for your job descriptions to save space and make it easy to digest for the viewer.

3. Mention any community service you have been involved in over the past couple of years.

4. Only list 4-5 of your previous job experiences and internships. You don't have to add the retail or customer service jobs you had before college unless they're directly related to your field.

5. Add some personality where you can, but don't be too cheesy.

With a clean resume, you'll feel confident going out into the workforce and have a good chance of landing the job you want.

2. Upgrade your wardrobe.

Part of graduating is going out into the professional world, so it's important that your closet is as ready as you are. You don't have to spend an arm and a leg upgrading your closet. Some pieces you already have can be dressed up with the right jackets and accessories.

To score some cash, sell some of your old clothes online or to retail stores that buy lightly used clothing, like Plato's Closet or Style Encore. You can even trade in the credit for some new clothes at the store without having to dip into your bank account.

3. Send out graduation announcements.

Sending graduation announcements to family and friends normally results in being sent cash or essentials you'll need when you go out on your own. Every little bit helps, even if it's just a nice message or a "good luck." Hearing from those you love as you start the next chapter of your life can be reassuring and give you the confidence you need.

4. Save up.

Throughout your last semester or so, you should make it a point to put aside money when you can. Getting your own place or moving to a new city can be expensive, so you want to be prepared to have some funds to support yourself until you start working at your full-time job.

It may be a good idea to pick up some extra hours at work or your internship as graduation nears (if you're not to busy trying to well...graduate).

5. Use your connections.

Hopefully you have used the resources available from your college throughout the last couple of years to network and make connections. Now is the time to call some people and try to put those connections to good use.

They say it's 30% your degree and 70% who you know. One person could help you score your dream job or a life-changing opportunity.

To all the 2019 graduates, good luck and go get 'em!

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
