Pre-Spring Break Checklist

It's so close, but not quite here yet.

It is so close, you can almost feel the sun on your face and the sand in between your toes. Spring break is right around the corner, but there are some things we cannot just ignore until we actually get to the beach (or wherever your destination may be).

The biggest and easiest thing to ignore the week before spring break is homework. Almost everything in you is screaming to just put it off until after break, but even the biggest procrastinators know better than this. If you have a professor that evilly assigns a paper due the Monday after break, do not fall for this trap. Get it done before break or else you're going to find yourself cramming in some late night essay-writing when you could be using your last day to relax.

Another big pre-vacation to-do list item is to make sure you pack early. If you have some extra time early on in the week, start getting your clothes together. This will later allow you to set more time aside for finishing work and even getting ahead in some classes. This will also help you not stress about forgetting anything major you might need for your week off!

Next thing on the list is to make sure you let yourself relax before break. This can be a high stress week with not only your work, but also your friends suffering from being way too close since winter break ended. It's not bad to admit we need a little break every now and then, even if it means locking yourself in your room for just five minutes.

Another must is to make sure you keep your room organized. This is important especially the week before break because even if it feels like your life is falling apart, keeping clean is proven to help reduce stress. Just think, if your work space and room is clean, so is your mind! That being said, keep it tidy!

Lastly, make sure you allow yourself to see the light at the end of the tunnel. You may have a couple of midterms, big writing assignments or even group projects stressing you out this week, but do not let it get the best of you. Allow yourself to look forward to your much-earned seven days off. Just don't let it blind you and keep you from finishing your work. That could make for a not-so-enjoyable break.

So, keep your head in the game and push through until the end of the week. As soon as you finish that last class on Friday, you are home free to enjoy your spring break!

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
