The saying "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me" is not true when it comes to the power of social media. Recently, R&B singer Kehlani, tried to commit suicide after cheating rumors began to quickly go viral after hip-hop artist partynextdoor, posted a picture on his Instagram. Fans began to quickly jump to conclusions that Kehlani cheated on NBA-superstar boyfriend, Kyrie Irving with her ex, partynextdoor.
Shortly after this picture was posted, slut shaming, cyber-bulling, and hate comments began to flood onto the Internet. People completely destroyed her.
Even R&B Chris Brown joined in on the immature commentary.
Kehlani deactivated her Twitter and Instagram accounts during the heat of the rumors before trying to take her own life. She then briefly came back to Instagram posting about her suicide attempt.
Regardless of if you believe she cheated on her boyfriend or not, suicide is a serious issue. Kehlani, like many others, have tried to attempt suicide because they feel voiceless. Someone's mental health is no joking matter. Fans need to be reminded that celebrities are human beings as well. People should not sit behind a computer screen and completely demean another person's character.
As fans of celebrities, the public often mistakes the idea of supporting an artist with knowing their character. Just a brief reminder to use social media in a positive platform. Be gentle with your words, for everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about.
