How to Pray Through the Storm

God brings on storms just to show you that He's your umbrella.

How to Pray Through the Storm
Kari Patterson

When you pray, how do you pray? How often do you pray? Do you only pray in times of need? Sometimes I struggle to remember to pray unless the Holy Spirit convicts me of forgetting to pray every day. Even sometimes I don't think I need anything to happen and I still pray. Hillsong's "What a Savior" says, "Should this life hold nothing but my Savior? I will praise You always." Let's look at what we're actually committing when we explain that.

I'm going to use a tough subject just to make it clearer: if you or your spouse just dealt with a miscarriage. Why did God allow that to happen? Or, why did He make me trudge through five years of constant pain even when I re-dedicated my life to Him? How come we have to serve Him when we feel like the ones being betrayed? You pray, "I don't get it, God! I listened and obeyed yet You let this happen to me! Why are you bringing me through this hell on earth? I'm obeying You yet You are taking away everything from me! I'm following every single rule in the Bible! I'm not perfect but I've never killed anyone! I've never stolen anything! Yet you're giving the people who've betrayed me everything they want! Are you even there? Do You not care about me as much as You do them? What have I done to deserve this?"

Everyone's theology is different but here's what I believe: God brings on storms just to show you that He's your umbrella in the storm. If we had easy lives, we would be less dependent on Him. Like the weather, storms always have endings; even the biggest ones.

Another quote from a song sings "Though the road seems long, I never walk alone." God doesn't curse His children, He challenges them. If our lives were perfect before heaven, we wouldn't look forward to heaven and could possibly get caught up in sin. The strongest believers are the ones who sometimes get pounded with temptation. You see, Satan tries using that one thing just to play with our minds. But with the Holy Spirit on our side and we commit to following Him, those temptations don't even exist. Why? Because God says to you, "Hey. You see those people who are tempting you? Stay in My arms and I'll protect you!"

Many people are surprised when I tell them that God has called me to be a grief counselor and share the Gospel with celebrities. They are mostly shocked but encouraging of my decision. You see, with faith in Christ with the Holy Spirit, sin can't defeat you. It has no power when you're a child of the Lord, and nothing in the whole world can beat that. I've had to end relationships because people cornered me and said, "Listen to my theology or you're stupid and hurtful because you're not listening to what I want you to believe so that makes you a terrible person!" Well, it's your choice. Truth hurts. Will you listen to the King and your Father or another human just like you except older and supposedly knows more than you just because of your age. You may not be a church leader, but you are a child and servant in the Church of the Bible and Holy Spirit. And if you can hold onto Him until your final breath, that shows Faith.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
