The Power Of Your Words

Sometimes, they do speak louder than actions.

They say that actions speak louder than words, but sometimes the use of powerful words is the most impactful action of all. I began writing articles as something for myself. As an engineering major, I have very few writing intensive classes. However, I have always enjoyed writing. I viewed this as an excellent opportunity to continue putting my thoughts into words. I never thought of the impact that my words would have on others. In the short amount of time that I have been writing, I have had two close friends come to me with very personal issues and express that my articles have contributed to their healing process. This was very eye-opening for me. Despite the fact that I do this for myself, I am influencing others. I truly realized that every voice, not just mine, creates an impactful ripple effect. In this realization, I learned three very important lessons.

Every single person is struggling with something that you may not know about, even the ones that seem as if they have it all together. Especially the ones that seem as if they have it all together. There is no way of knowing what goes on behind closed doors, which is why it is particularly important to be sensitive in your choice of words. Even if you are just joking, you may not realize the nerve you've hit with an insensitive comment. On the other hand, something you consider to be a small compliment may brighten someone's day in a way that you may not have been aware that they needed. Your words have lasting impacts on the ears they fall upon.

Every voice deserves to be heard. You may feel as if your words have very little meaning or importance, but this is simply not true. Every thought, every perspective, every opinion you have is meaningful and deserves to be heard. By expressing yourself, you will find connections with people that you never could've imagined were there. The first step is to put it out there. This may seem daunting, but it is so rewarding.

You never know who is listening. When I write, I don't write with a particular audience in mind. I write what I am experiencing and feeling, and hope that it resonates with someone out there. I am so delighted to know that it has. However, the people that I have touched surprised me. You never know who is listening to what you have to say. More importantly, you never know when you will say just what they need to hear. But by speaking kindly and genuinely, you are making a wonderful impact in a multitude of ways.

I hope that my words continue to make their way into the hearts of those in need. More importantly, I hope that everyone realizes the great amount of good that can be done when they use the power of their words to touch the lives of others.

"Think twice before you speak, because your words and influence will plant the seed of either success or failure in the mind of another." - Napoleon Hill

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
