As a blogger and social media influencer, I get to do a lot of cool stuff around town. Last weekend, I was invited to attend to Power on Heels first summit. Power on Heels Network© is a bilingual community by women and for women. Its mission is to promote and boost women's professional development, empower through experience, support small businesses, and engage dialog on issues in our (local) community.
During the summit, I had the chance to meet some amazingly inspiring women continue to make changes both big and small in the Houston community. In this day and age, we are still constrained to old social stigmas and archaic parameters imposed by years of society. We are slowly breaking through but some social taboos still remain very much alive. Every day, women have to decide whether they want to grow a family or a career. We are often criticized and scrutinized regardless of what path we decide to take. We still have governments wanting to have a say in the way we use our bodies, and we still have men who think like Trump. ( don't even get me started on that one)
It is the year 2016, and misogyny is still very much alive.
Before you roll your eyes back and say "Not another one of these feminists" lecturing us, let me start by saying, this is more than just being a feminist. Because if you don't think there is a problem, it is obvious the problem doesn't affect you. However, misogyny affects us all in one way or another. Thankfully we are finally opening our eyes. (Us) Millennials are changing the way in which gender is constructed, and perhaps as a whole, we can move away from old gender roles and predisposed parameters. Perhaps we can move toward a more accepting and equal society, in which your salary is none dependent on your gender, but dependent on your experience and qualifications only. Perhaps we can move toward a society without glass ceilings, one in which both men and women can simply be human. Because regardless of our sexual orientation, gender or genitalia, that is what we all are - human.
