The Power Of Knowing Yourself

It's stronger than you'd think.

Knowing yourself seems simple, and by definition it is. But in this world where society has a firm grip on everyone's minds, does anyone even know themselves anymore? There are many aspects to a true knowledge of one's self: emotional, physical, mental, pleasurable, abilities, etc. There's a difference in knowledge and belief. Many can confidently say that they "believe they can make it through medical school," or "believe they'll be a good parent," but confidence is key. Confidence of one's own ability to complete a goal pushes them that much further and faster into achievement.

The easiest starting point is to take the Myers-Briggs personality test and learn about your strengths and weaknesses. Are you an introvert or extrovert, better with sensing or intuition, or even your judging or perceiving sides? You may think you know the answer just by reading those questions, but these quizzes are worded differently each time they are repeated to give your brain an easy way to answer truly. Do I really enjoy lectures, or am I just sucking it up because I'm told to?

Knowing your strengths and weaknesses is one thing, but applying them or adjusting situations around them is another. Personally, listening is difficult for me, as I am a more visual and vocal learner, so, yes mom, I do attend my classes still, and I have adjusted my study techniques accordingly. Instead of mindlessly reading my lecture notes over and over until something clicks, I use my fellow peers to talk to. Talking out the issues help me find resolutions, but for others it'll only make things more complicated. Application takes motivation to better the circumstance. A habit can be formed in 22 days, but can be broken in one day, so commit to the change. Eventually the results will surprise you.

Physical knowledge seems simple with mirrors, but would you be able to say for certain that you are heart-healthy and could run away from a kidnapper, or dog to keep it a little less violent? Working out sucks, but also helps. Feeling good and being body-posi, yes even for the guys, keeps your confidence level a little above normal to boost those speeches or allow you to talk to the pretty girl. Victoria's Secret angels are beautiful, don't get me wrong, but you must come to terms with the fact that you were not scouted at age 14 and do not live their type of lives with juice detoxes every other day and workouts four times in one day. We are the working class and proud of it.

Emotional knowledge is a beautiful thing. Depression, anxiety, and all that jazz, they're important. People brush it off as another symptom of being in the workforce, but, if untreated, it can cause some major breakdowns. Know what you're capable of and set goals a little past that line to really impress yourself when you accomplish them. Balance the things that take time to accomplish by having little wins every now and again, like that paper thrown across the room and into the trash can without a backboard: win.

Mental knowledge is where we can grow the most. Learning from mistakes is human, but also the most beneficial way to get that lesson drilled into you. A fear of failing will only hold you back, so use those new-found strengths to find ways around inevitable failure. And use people around you to bounce ideas off of, because learning from others is just as useful as learning from yourself.

Pleasure is touchy. Literally. Touch another person, drink a little too much, and dance the night away. With hard work comes some breaks. Allot your time so you can let yourself have fun, whether that be a night out with the girls or a night in with the TV. No judgement there at all, because finding pleasure in life is tough sometimes, and it's your time. The only thing to keep in mind with pleasure is being responsible with that time, because if you aren't, the pleasure is harder to find, and you end up wasting valuable time for goal achieving.

Once you've come to know yourself and your limits, strengths, weaknesses, and every in-and-out of your mind, you are capable of so much more than you could have dreamed before. Being open-minded and confident bring new opportunities and opens new doors for you. Embrace yourself and soon everyone else will too, because it's way easier to be with someone who knows what they're doing, or at least sells the charade of knowing. Confidence is the biggest key on your key-chain in this Kardashian-infested, sex-addicted world.
