One of the first questions you ask someone here at college is "where are you from". This simple question can send the conversation in so many different directions, connecting people in so many different ways. It is also a bit of a game for me trying to explain to people where Poulsbo, Washington even is. I usually start off with statements such as "the Seattle area" and then if they are understanding of the cities in Seattle I then further explain that it is actually across the water from Seattle. Then I will usually leave it at that unless they have been to Poulsbo before. Yet I always know if they have actually been there because the connection of knowing Poulsbo always lights them and I both up.
I always become overjoyed if people have actually been to Poulsbo. Which is very interesting for me to say. Often when I was in high school and probably along with many other high schoolers they always make statements such as "I can't wait to get out of Poulsbo" or "I'm ready to go to college", which are statements I would say as well. Although I do strongly believe it is important to branch out of their hometowns and grow. However, leaving gets you a chance to miss it. It gives you a chance to appreciate all that Poulsbo truly has to offer. Being away has made me understand how truly lucky I was to grow up in such a wonderful place.
I had everything I could have ever asked for right in my backyard. I was able to grow up running around in the woods among the evergreens. To be able to take a short car ride to the beach to jump off docks or go boating. I was able to take an hour car ride to hike the great pacific northwest Olympic mountains. Yet the big city of Seattle was a ferry ride away. I was also able to be so proud of the community I was apart of. I was able to become so involved with constant support all around me. Therefore I could not think of a better place to grow up. It helped equip me with so many skills and allow me to be a well-rounded person.
This is why when someone tells me they know where Poulsbo is my eyes light up with joy.
