The hardest thing about the holidays isn’t finding what gift to give or where to spend it. The hardest part of the holidays is being body positive. It’s the shopping and the food which I love, but there is something critical about it. We may feel self--conscious. In fact we find ways to justify what we eat rather than enjoy our food. Black Friday does not help.
The holiday bod honestly what the f**** is a holiday bod? There is so much pressure to be a body type and being defeated seems like the only thing we can be. To challenge what may feel like the season of body shame here are a few things you can do.
1. Words of affirmation
When you risk being surrounded by negative comments it’s important to build yourself up and comfort your being. Stand in front of a mirror, whisper under your breath, or go to bed with something positive.
Easier said than done, right? I have often thought of the many artiest I follow, who say inspirational things. “Always wear your invisible crown,” unknown. Or like The Help “You is smart, you is kind, and you is important.” It may seem like a silly idea, but words hold a lot of power. Words can break you down or build you up.
2. Bubble baths
Alone time can be essential to get away from the noise. A nice soothing bubble bath can be the trick. Take a book with you, carefully listen to music or watch something on your laptop after you set it up on a stand outside of the tub. Consider using a nice scrub, lavender perhaps. Relax your body. You will start to feel better in no time.
3. Listen to music
Words hold a lot of power. Words of affirmation may not be enough to get you through the holidays and its ok. There are other ways words can help you. Go through your favorite songs. Beyoncé’s "Flawless" and Hailee Seinfeld’s "I love myself" are great examples of self--love and the perfect boost to your self--esteem.
4. Glam & comfort
Sometimes the best way to combat those negative messages about bodies is to dress up. Wear whatever makes you feel good. Do your make up, shave if you want, or zip up in a hoodie and sweatpants. The road to glam and comfort is not exclusive. Think of it as your middle finger to the world.
5. Treat yourself
The holidays are all about giving. I get it. This does not exclude giving to yourself because you deserve it. You can treat yourself in many ways like going for a walk, eating a couple cookies, buying a new pair of shoes etc. Cut yourself some slack.
Self--care is essential. How ever self--care looks for, you practice it. If you need to step away from a situation, do so. Remember you're well being is important.
The jolly-ollie holidays are tough sometimes and it takes work to get through them.
