My Post-Election Thoughts

Just a few things I wanted to share as I process the results of the election.

I hardly ever write anything serious and I never write anything political, but in light of this recent election, there are a few things I feel the need to say.

1. You are still so loved

Seeing Trump get elected after all the hateful things he's said about immigrants, people of color, women, and the lgbt community makes it really easy for anyone who fits in one or more of those groups to feel attacked, unimportant, and alone. But I just want to let all my brothers and sisters know that you are not alone. There are so many people out there who still love and support you and know that we are all fundamentally the same. And I'm so sorry that there are so many people in this country who are unhappy with their lives and feel the need to take it out on you. That's not fair to you and will not get us anywhere productive, but some people are just too preoccupied with their hate to realize that.

2. We have to keep fighting

It's important to remember that at least half the country does not support this man at all. It's not too late to start fighting or keep fighting if you have been all along. Attend protests, write to your representatives, donate to Planned Parenthood. There's still so so many things you can do to make this a little better. Don't give up! He will only truly win when we stop fighting.

3. It's going to be ok

Trust me, I know this feels like the end of the world. I cried for 3 days straight after the election. I can't guarantee that nothing bad is going to happen in the next four years and we probably are going to be in a bad place for a little bit. However, at least now we know how deeply rooted the issues in this country are and start taking strides towards correcting them. If only millennials voted then Hilary Clinton would've won by a landslide. That should tell you that this younger generation really is open minded and taking steps in the right direction. We can be the change we want to see. We really are the future and hopefully we will be able to make the future a little brighter and more accepting.

4. Love trumps hate

I truly believe this. The only way to fight hate is to spread love. Stand in solidarity with your muslim, latinx, transgender friends, family, loved ones. Show them how much you care. If we can band together under the idea that no one is a second class citizen then we can show them that we refuse to give up and we refuse to let them turn our love into hate.

I'm sad. I'm disappointed. I'm scared. But I know this is not the time to give up. There will always be love in this country and I know one day we can actually make America great.

We don't buy into these... just like how we don't buy our friends.

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
