Infinite Dimensional Time Theory - Is Time Travel Possible?
Most educated people have heard of the Space Time Continuum. For those of you who haven't, here is a brief explanation of what it is, according to Wikipedia: "Space-time is a mathematical model that joins space and time into a continuum". It's not rocket science! Okay, technically it is, but that just makes this all the more interesting!
There are a lot of people arguing over whether or not time travel is possible. They normally base their arguments on their knowledge or belief that time itself remains in our current dimension and that in order to time travel you would have to open a wormhole of sorts. Some people believe that it is impossible simply because of the rules that follow time travel: it has its own paradoxical system or Temporal Paradox, which is defined in the fourth paragraph of this article.
Now, in my theory, time is set like this; there are infinite dimensions. In one dimension, it takes place exactly one millisecond before what is happening currently. Each dimension is a millisecond before the other and it goes way back forever. In one of these infinite dimensions, as you are reading this article, Hitler is currently rising to power. In another dimension, the birth of America is happening. It can go the other way too. However, when it comes to the future, you make those dimensions in a way; for the future the millisecond that has yet to occur is made up as you make a decision, that millisecond is now determined as what is going to happen but when that decision is made there is a split in that dimension. Now there are several dimensions, yet, set at the same time are created and each one has a slight difference between them because each one is the by product of a different decision you didn't make. That means that those dimensions are literally what could have been if you chose a different decision. Infinite dimensions, infinite time, infinite possibilities. The dimensions that are "closest to us" or (for lack of a better saying) "more reachable" for us are the ones in which everything that has happened, happened. We have already made these decisions. If scientists can figure out the technology to do this, I truly think time travel can become a very real possibility.
However, we must make sure we go into the correct chain of dimensional time in order to go back to whatever time you want. If you went into the wrong Dimension Chain you would probably be very confused! For example, if I wanted to go back in time to stop myself from doing something stupid yet I ended up in the wrong Dimensional Chain and in that chain I didn't make that mistake that I was going back to fix, things might possibly look much different in that Dimensional Chain. Instead of seeing your usual room, you might see a completely different room from your memories. If you're usually messy, your room may look spotless and clean in this particular Dimensional Chain. This is because the decisions you made in this Dimensional Chain are slightly different than the ones you made in your own Dimensional Chain. This is why getting the correct Dimensional Chain is imperative. That is, unless you wish to explore the other Dimensional Chains to see what could have been if you made different decisions in life.
However, there still stands the issue of the Temporal Paradox, Time Paradox, or Time Travel Paradox. According to Wikipedia, a Temporal Paradox is a paradox, an apparent contradiction, or a logical contradiction that is associated with the idea of time and time travel. Temporal Paradoxes fall into two broad groups: Consistency Paradoxes, exemplified by the Grandfather Paradox; and Casual Loop. Okay, so now you are more than likely wondering what Grandfather Paradox and/or a Casual Loop is. Don't worry, you won't go uninformed!
Wikipedia tells us that the Consistency Paradox/Grandfather Paradox occurs when a future event prevents the occurrence of a past event that was partially or entirely the cause of the future event, thereby preventing the future event from occurring, thus creating a contradiction. Consistency Paradoxes occur whenever changing the past is possible! This particular paradox covers the part of time travel in which you can go back and change what has happened without breaking the Space-Time laws or basically screwing up the Space-Time Continuum itself. Now we move on to the definition of a Casual Loop; what is is and what it is about. A Casual Loop is a paradox of time travel that occurs when a future event is the cause of a past event, which, in turn is the cause of the future event. Those two events then exist in space-time, however, their origin cannot be determined. A Casual Loop may involve an event, a person, an object, or information. A Casual Loop is also known as a Boot-Strap Paradox, Predestination Paradox or Ontological Paradox in fiction, according to Wikipedia. We also must not forget about the questions people ask about time travel.
Questions like, " Let's say I decided that I hate my father enough to go back in time and kill him not knowing he has yet to have impregnated her, would I be able to get my own mother pregnant and become my own father? What if I killed a major figure in history? What would happen? What are the limitations?" I'll answer those questions in either one or two weeks so please be patient!
I am also adding my own question to the list of questions that I am saving for my second or third part of this series: after the person or people go into the past and change a few things, if they are not satisfied with the way things turn out, could they go back and undo what they have done?
Okay, now that you know a little bit more about how things work in the space-time continuum, I can finally get down to the part you have all been waiting for! Does time travel have more plausibility with the Infinite Dimensional Time Theory? I believe it may be a very real possibility, but we can never know for sure until we gather the technology and build an actual time machine.
