As September slowly starts to bring that fall weather we have all been craving, I couldn’t help but think about the beautiful plants that summer supplied us with. Living in a house now my roommate has amazing indoor flowers that bring a smile to my face each time I see them. On days of remembrance, grieve, or even celebration – let us focus on the little things that bring joy. Plants that are great for indoors and are proven to make people happy, healthier and brighten up more than just the room.
As I began to read through countless articles, blogs, and even scientific findings I saw one thing that was true – flowers really do make people happier.
An article in the Florists Chronicles states, “research has proven that flowers make people happy when they receive them … what we didn’t know is that spending a few days with flowers in the home can affect a wide variety of feelings."
Flowers bring about good energy, warmth and life. Whether you love roses, sunflowers, cactuses, or basil -- get yourself a plant for your home. I know it seems so simple and silly, but it will change your outlook on life just a little bit. Nature makes people happy, and in a world where we tend to close ourselves in our rooms, bringing nature into those spaces can improve more than just your mood.
Plants help people breathe better by providing a natural humidifier, they give you something to nurture and love, and they make people happy. So if you are feeling down, want to spruce up a room, or are a general nature lover, go out and get yourself a plant, because it can make all the difference.
As I look at the bay window in my family room right now, I am greeted by bright yellow, happy sunflowers and they give me a sense of joy because I know no matter how hard my day has been, what I am going through, those sunflowers are living and blooming each day before my eyes. I can see them changing and growing, which gives me hope.
It seems pretty deep to get this all from a simple flower, but if you can take something so small and simple and change your perspective just a little bit, you see things differently. This little plant inside my house is providing the world with more oxygen, turning its face toward the sun each day and growing. Something so tiny has the strength to seek out sunlight on the gloomiest of days. While there are scientific explanations for why plants do this and how they help people become more happy -- for me the proof is in the feeling. The feeling I know each day is a little brighter because there are things like plants to remind us how beautiful life really is.
