This week, I was encouraged by my lovely twin sister Blaine to write this article. Now, if you don't know this incredible person I call my sister, you better get to know her as soon as you can! She told me that she wanted to change her outlook on life. That we are so much happier when we begin to look at the positives rather than the negatives, and told me that life really isn't as bad as we make it.
Now I could not have heard this at a better time. If you know me, you know I rarely am in a bad mood and when I am its only for a short amount of time. However this week, was a little different for me. I can't quite put it into exact words, but I was just feeling a little down all week. Do you ever get into those moods where you are trying to find something to look forward to so that you can make it through the week? Yeah, that was me.
So the day after she said that, I woke up and decided I would try out her little plan for myself! This entire week, every day before bed I would make myself list 5 positives of the day, no matter how small they were before I prayed. I found that towards the end of the week, I was coming up with positives during the entire day, without even thinking too hard about it and it was really fun to reflect!
After reflecting on this week, I learned life is worth so much more than material things. So often if we see other have the newest brand name clothes, or we scroll down online shopping pages and fill our carts to the brim we fill our minds with lies. That if we have these things we will be happy. That could not be farther from the truth. The first day, I came up with things like "Today I got paid" and "I ordered new letters" and those things are great however by the end of the week they turned into "I got to spend time with my big" and "I laughed so hard I cried with my roommate." Just tiny changes, but ones that can make all the difference when I look back later in life. I honestly won't remember what shoes I wore in college, but I will remember when I did a cartwheel down the hall and somehow managed to fall on my face while dying of laughter, or when my pledge class went to CVS and spent an hour trying to print a picture out.
So I guess where I am going with this article is just hopefully to give you some encouragement that this life can be hard, and can be stressful, however if we look at the positives in the day rather than the few moments we messed up, or didn't do well we will be much happier. And to, above all else, live our lives as we were called. Thank you Blaine for changing my outlook on this week, and all the weeks to come. I love you!
