I am a northern girl who has lived in the south for 20 years. Everyone in the south speaks when they make eye contact. Not doing so is perceived as being rude. In the morning, strangers greet each other with "good morning." Friends and acquaintances say "how you doing," "how are you," or "hey." At the very least, they will wave their hands or nod their heads. People, who are close, greet each other with a hug, a touch of the arm or a handshake. The morning greeting is often followed by conversations to 'catch up' on the events of the last 24 hours or 24 days. I suppose we are just happy to see each other.

The most effective form of saying "good morning" includes making eye contact and smiling. Smiles are contagious. It is almost impossible to smile and not have it returned. In the south, you may end up saying "good morning" 20 times walking from your car to your building.

If you have ever ridden public transportation in the north, you know that no one speaks. A rider may speak to the bus driver or the conductor as they pay their fare, but for the most part riders listen to their music, read their newspapers and separate themselves from the masses.

At this time of year, northerners are tired of winter. It is dark when they leave in the morning and dark by the time they get home. The weather is cold, wet, or both. People are grumpy and ready for winter to transition into spring. I don't know if this is why northerners don't greet each other when they make eye contact, but I do believe that southerners have it right.

Greeting each other in the morning is more than a genteel form of manners. Speaking to others in the morning has many positive results.

  • It connects us with others. This is important because we are social beings who thrive on having positive relationships with other humans.
  • It makes us feel good. Feel good hormones are released when another person smiles at us. Our self-esteem is massaged when others acknowledge that we exist.
  • It takes our minds off our problems if only for a moment. Making eye contact, smiling and saying "good morning" forces us to focus on something other than what makes us sad, angry or frustrated.
  • It is and energizing, positive way to start the day.

Reasons a Good Morning Text is So Important: Make Their Day

You may think that a good morning text is pointless but it can mean more than you know. This is why it's so important and how you can make it the best.

Everyone knows just how sweet a good morning text can be. There are countless memes on the Internet depicting just how much those texts can mean to someone. But why is it that something so ordinary and expected can mean so much?

Truthfully, it shouldn't. There shouldn't really be any reason for a good morning text to make someone smile the way it does. After all, do you really get all giddy when you wake up next to someone and they say good morning? Probably not.

Sometimes the little things mean the most

Think about all the things your partner has done for you. Which things meant the most? More than likely, it's a collection of little things that popped into your mind. The daily things they've done time and time again are the things we appreciate most.

Because they're consistent. They might be small things but they add up to one big result: your happiness. It's not so much the major things they do that make you happy for a day but rather, it's the simple things they do every single day that adds up to long-term happiness.

Why that good morning text can mean so much

The next time you think you can get away with not texting your lover good morning, you may want to remember why it's so important. This might also help you understand why they could be upset if you don't send it to them.

#1 It means you're thinking about them. Who doesn't love to know their partner is thinking about them right away in the morning? It's the best feeling. When you wake up to that good morning text sent right when you know their alarm went off, it makes your whole day.

They just woke up from being basically unconscious for eight hours and the first thing they think to do is text you? That's insanely romantic and definitely meaningful.

#2 It's almost effortless appreciation. Every person needs to show appreciation for their significant other. A lack of appreciation is one of the main reasons couples split up. You have to show them you love having them in your life.

And sending a good morning text is a super, super easy way to do just that. When you wake up and send that message, you're telling your partner that you want them to have a good day. That's enough to show your appreciation on the small scale.

#3 Starting the day with a message from a lover feels good. It feels really, really good. Put yourself in their shoes. How do you feel when it happens to you? Probably amazing. To know your partner thinks of you right away in the morning helps you feel good about your relationship. It makes you feel secure and it sets you up to have a great day.

#4 It's simple chivalry. For those who say chivalry is dead, it's not. Anyone who says otherwise probably never gets a good morning text. Sending that message is a great way to be chivalrous.

It's basically the same as opening the car door for your partner or paying for a meal. It's simple, easy, and lets them know you care about them.

#5 It'll make their whole day. It might seem insignificant but it has a powerful effect on their entire day. You have the power to turn their day into a great one or a bad one. Not texting them will only make them insecure and think you're upset with them.

So send that message. It doesn't need to be any more complicated than, "good morning, babe." If you want to make it even more meaningful, you can switch it up so it doesn't seem like you're doing it out of routine.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
