Take The Positive Pledge

Is it too late for a new year, new you?

It's so easy to get caught up in life sometimes. You have your good days and your bad days. There are days when all you do is watch Netflix and sleep, others where you have enough energy to charge a battery, and then you have days where you have a never-ending to do list to conquer; unfortunately your coffee doesn't seem to be giving you that energy boost you were hoping for. No matter what we do or how our day goes, we pick it apart and just focus on all the negative. Now it's time to debunk those negative thoughts.

"I'm too (fat, thin, muscular, tall, short, etc.)"

No you're not. I'm not going to say some cliché quote about no matter your shape or size or whatever. Look at yourself right now. You are alive, and that should be a good enough reason to love yourself, no matter what you look like. You have the power to change your body. And if you don't, (height is hard to change, I understand), then you have the power to change what you think about your body.

"Sweating is so gross."

Strangely enough, sweating (which can cause body odor) is natural! Our bodies sweat to cool down our internal temperature, and thanks to puberty, this can sometimes cause that oh-so-familiar-but-oh-so-unpleasant smell. Oh well! If you're at the gym, on a run, or just going about your day and you begin to sweat, just see it as a sign that your body is just doing its job. It's nothing to be embarrassed about; it shows your hard work!

"Today sucked."

Did it really though? Surely we find ourselves saying this far too often. When our to-go coffee order isn’t made correctly, we immediately declare the day to be one of the worst days ever. I know it sounds silly, but we all can admit to saying this or at least thinking this once in our caffeine-addicted life. So what if today may not seem to be best, you can turn it around and find ways to make it better.

So take a moment and think about the negative thoughts that you've had today. Write them down if you need to. Now find ways to reconstruct them into positives. Make a positivity pledge. Don't know how? Check out http://www.thepositivepledge.com/ and sign the pledge!

"I pledge to be a positive person and positive influence on my family, friends, co-workers, and community.

I promise to be positively contagious and share more smiles, laughter, encouragement and joy with those around me.

I vow to stay positive in the face of negativity.

When I am surrounded by pessimism I will choose optimism.

When I feel fear I will choose faith.

When I want to hate I will choose love.

When I experience a challenge I will look for opportunity to learn and grow.

When faced with adversity I will find strength.

When I experience a set-back I will be resilient.

When I meet failure I will fall forward towards future success.

With vision, hope, and faith, I will never give up and will always move forward towards my destiny.

I believe my best days are ahead of me, not behind me.

I believe I'm here for a reason and my purpose is greater than my challenges.

I believe that being positive not only makes me better, it makes everyone around me better.

So today and everyday I will be positive and strive to make a positive impact on the world."

Everyone who is in college right now, or has ever been, knows the struggle of pulling in the strings at the last second. It seems impossible, and you have to do a LOT of things in order to assure your future for the next semester.

April Ludgate, historically, is a very annoyed person, and she doesn't hide it. Of all the times that I binged and re-binged "Parks and Rec," her attitude relates more and more to me.

To The Cheerful Person On Their Rainy Days, You Are Valid

The world is not always sunshine and rainbows, and you do not have to be, either.

Ask friends of mine to name a quality about me, and one a lot them will point out the fact that I am almost always smiling. I like to laugh and smile -- not to quote Buddy the Elf in April, but smiling is my favorite! It is probably my favorite go-to expression. However, what a lot of people do not see is that I have my down days. I have days when smiling and laughing is a real struggle, or when I have so much on my plate that going out of my way to behappy takes more effort than I have stored in me. Be it a symptom of college and growing up or a facet of life, I cannot always be content.
