The Positive Aspects Of Wintertime

Everyone knows that I hate cold weather and the winter. I would rather have the temperature at 95 degrees with humidity than have to wear a puffy coat and a hat. However, there is no getting rid of the cold (unless you move or go on vacation, which are the ideal options) so we might as well embrace it.

There is only one thing I genuinely like about winter: Christmastime. December makes me forget how cold it is because everyone is full of happiness and love. It is a time to sit by the fireplace with your family, watch Christmas movies, and drink hot chocolate. You can eat as many baked goods as you want and just tell yourself that you'll go to the gym in January. It truly is the most wonderful time of the year (besides summer).

Unfortunately, Christmastime only lasts for one out of the four horrific months of winter, so we need to find other things to do besides spread holiday cheer.

One part about the colder weather that I constantly hear people saying they love is the fashion. Many like the fall/winter fashion more than summer because they feel like they are dressed nicer. I agree, but I would still rather be in shorts. However, it is true that it definitely is easier to feel more put together in the winter. The best part of it is that you can wear a sweater, a pair of jeans, and nice boots just about anywhere. Also, with the layers comes the option to opt out of shaving everyday. This is definitely debatable amongst females but I think most of us can agree that shaving everyday is most likely not on our list of priorities in the cold weather.

Another great thing about winter is that you can't feel too guilty for sitting inside all day watching movies and television because there really is nothing else to do! Whenever I binge watch shows when it's nice out, I end up regretting it because that time could've been spent outside, embracing what little time is left with the warm weather. In the winter, no one wants to leave their houses so everyone is probably at home doing the same thing (you might have to upgrade your Netflix plan to allow up to four screens to play at the same time).

If you are feeling adventurous and want to do something fun, you can go to an indoor ice skating rink (or outdoor if the cold doesn't bother you).

An alternative to staying at home and watching TV is to go to the movie theater with your friends.

Personally, I hate the snow and I avoid it at all costs. Most people, however, love the snow so one of their favorite things about winter could be going skiing, sledding, or any of those snow activities in which I will never be participating in (if I do, I'll let you know).

Naturally, for me, one of the only other enjoyable parts of winter are the days when the temperature goes up to the 50s or 60s. During the spring and summer, those conditions would require us to take out our winter coats, but in February, a day like that would have people wearing summer dresses!

Side note: if it was five years ago, I would say my favorite thing about winter is the snow days but now with everything online, professors have no problem sending assignments through email.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
