With pride month already here, FX's new series "Pose" is more appropriate than ever. From the creators of contemporary classics like "Glee" and "American Horror Story" comes this new drama revolving around the underground drag scene of New York in the late 80s.
The pilot, which premiered on June 3, 2018, set the stage for what is often a mysterious topic for many. Blanca (MJ Rodriguez), a Latina trans woman, leaves her house headed by Elektra (Dominique Jackson) of the House of Abundance to start her own house. In the process, she recruits several people, including a young disowned queer black man named Damon (Ryan Jamaal Swain) and her former Abundance partner Angel (Indya Moore). "AHS" fans will have reason to watch when they see Angel develop a relationship with Evan Peters's character Stan Bowes, who just lands a job working for then-real estate mogul Donald Trump.
"Pose" relies on the glam and pompousness of its underground ballroom scenes to have you keep watching, and it does so spectacularly. Moreover, the show is placed in a time where American society is rattled with discontent, poverty, and an HIV/AIDS outbreak. "Pose" reflects a darker side of LGBTQ history which is important to recognize given the strength of the community today. Before the current age of "RuPaul's Drag Race" and "Paris Is Burning" could take shape comes the tale that becomes the setting for this new FX drama.
This is also not to mention that this series has made history by featuring more transgender actors in a cast than any show before it. Plus, it has recently picked up notable trans figures, Janet Mock and Our Lady J, to be on its writing staff.
So the question still remains: is "Pose" worth the watch. Absolutely. With Pride month here and many of the festivities to kick off in the following weeks, FX's new series is most definitely a show worth checking out for its charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent.
New episodes of "Pose" premiere Sundays at 9/8c on FX.
