Last week, former president, George W. Bush released his new book entitled Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors. The 192-page book features over 60 portraits of military veterans, painted by President Bush, along with their own personal stories of triumph and courage. It is available for preorder now.
So why is this book so important? It’s just a book of paintings by a former president, right? Wrong. This book is a look into the lives of countless military veterans who dedicated their lives to serving our country. This book tells stories of courage, bravery, and sacrifice. Okay, so the stories are important, but aren’t there lots of books like this out there? Why should I read this one? Well, while there are countless reasons why this book should be at the top of your reading list, here’s a few reasons why this book could potentially be the most important book of 2017.
1. Bush got to know the veterans he painted personally.
President Bush spent time with each of these veterans, opening up his home to them, to learn more about their individual stories. He spent time golfing, mountain biking, and relaxing with them and got to know them personally.
2. All proceeds from Portraits of Courage will go to the Bush Institute’s veteran’s programs.
President Bush believes that supporting veterans and helping them transition into civilian life should be a top priority. All proceeds from the book will go to veteran’s programs to help with these issues.
3. The book features the story of Air Force Master Sgt. Israel Del Toro, and many other courageous men and women.
Del Toro suffered severe burns on over 80 percent of his body after an IED explosion in Afghanistan. After extensive rehabilitation, he has become the first 100 percent combat disabled Air Force technician to re-enlist in the military. His incredible story, along with many others, are featured in this book.
4. Bush has only been painting for about five years.
After leaving office, President Bush spent time reading Winston Churchill’s essay, “Painting As A Pastime.” He says this made him want to try painting as his own hobby. Not long after, he hired a painting instructor and asked her to help him discover his “inner Rembrandt.” After five short years of painting as a hobby, he decided to use his newfound talent for good. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks, huh?
5. The book shines a light on not only the physical injuries many veterans face, but also the injuries not visible on the outside.
President Bush features portraits and stories of veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injuries (TBI) as well as physical injuries. The book shines a light on the injuries we can’t necessarily see on the outside, but that are just as difficult.
6. Bush has been using his book tour to highlight the need for more opportunities for veterans, not more pity.
President Bush has discussed the need for more opportunities for veterans returning to civilian life, not more pity. Army Sgt. Major Christopher Self accompanied Bush on the Today Show, stating "They don't need a handout, they don't want favors — they want opportunities.''
