My hope with this short article series is to bring light to some cool “hole in the wall” places in the small town of Portsmouth, Ohio. Many of the students that attend Shawnee State University located in this river city are looking for things to do while they are spending their collegiate career here. To start off this series, we are going to take a look into a Portsmouth native restaurant…

Port City Cafe and Pub.

Port City is located at 424 Chillicothe St. It has a full service bar and menu for its customers to enjoy. Daily food and drink specials are available at a discount price for those college student penny pinching! Port City also offers SSU students a discount! With every meal purchased, you get a free fountain soda (and they have the cool Coke Freestyle machine, so it's actually a good deal). The amazing staff members are very helpful and friendly (and I say this not just because I work there).

Port City is kind of an awesome place actually, and no one really knows it. Pub Quiz, a team trivia game, is played every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month. It gets a bit competitive, but coming out for a good time is also an option for something different to do in town! Every Friday and Saturday there is live entertainment. So for those of you looking for something cool to experience Portsmouth in a different light and just chill out, head out to the Pub! There are local performers that come, as well as Karaoke nights and Open Mic Nights the first weekend of the month!

You can check out the full menu on their website http://www.theportcitypub.com, as well as events for the coming weeks and learn a little bit about Port City!

Working here, I see Port City from a different angle. But after working here and seeing the way things work around the place, I really enjoy it! It has a really cool atmosphere with an Irish theme to it. The food is SO good, especially to fill you up after a long day. (Some of my favorites are the Irish Loaded Potatoes and the Chicken Bacon Wrap) The meals may seem “a bit pricey” to some, but they give you a hefty portion so splitting a sandwich with a friend is a definite option here! And although I am not old enough to enjoy the drinks at the bar, they look and smell very delicious! The customers I serve seem to love them as well.

With classes at Shawnee State starting up soon, I hope to see a few of you out at The Pub! Don’t just take my word for it, come check it out for yourself!

(NOTE: Yes, I work here. No, they didn't ask me to write this. I genuinely just like the place a lot.)

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
