Google Is Our Mom Away From Our Real Mom

Starting to realize my Google usage is a little excessive, how is yours?

How many times a day do you use Google? For real, I challenge you to keep tabs on how many times a day you type something into Google. I remember in high school, our class president thanked Google for getting us through in her speech. I look back now and I'm like, sis if only we knew.

I don't know what it is about college that has made me use Google for literally everything. Maybe it's because it takes you straight to Quizlet or Course Hero or maybe it's because I don't have my mom here to ask 'how do I get red wine out of something?'

This got me interested though, so I took a look at my recent searches. Of course, it was filled with school work questions, but I also searched things like "when is the sunset today," "towns near Phoenix that start with T," and my personal favorite "how to get more done in one day." I started to think back to each of these searches and what the conversations or thoughts that I was having at the time were. I then noticed that there are so many times that I'm just bored, so I ask Google something.

What is it about college that makes us use Google so much? I literally don't think I could drive somewhere, write a paper, or have an actual conversation without using Google at least once to find something out. I am absolutely convinced that as soon as you get to college, Google starts to control of you. It's seriously become a force of habit; I open up safari, which automatically goes to Blackboard, but out of habit I will type Google in the search bar even if I actually needed to just be on Blackboard, which worries me...do people in the 'real world' not use Google this much? Will I have to learn to live without it once I graduate? Can the overuse of Google searches get me in trouble in the future?

As college students, it is so convenient to search something on Google when you don't know the answer because you are provided with endless amounts of information at the click of a button. However, this week I challenge you to try to search your brain first! Or one day no one is going to know how to do anything on their own and when the internet goes down for a day we will all be absolutely lost walking around completely brain dead. Don't let Google control you too; it's the newest epidemic.
