I will admit, I am the ultimate "trend-bandwagoner" — if I see one of my favorite celebrities endorse it, I will buy it. There are so many products created today that let us know how innovative and beneficial they are, especially within the beauty community. While some brands show promise in these statements, the question is, "Do they actually work?"
All of the products I'm about to list I have in fact used and will even give my personal opinion of whether it is worth it or not. While I do give my opinion, I understand that there are many differing opinions which is why I will say this: my opinion is not the only nor the most important opinion! I know for me, personally, when I shop for products that I do not necessarily know much about, I am always grateful for an outside opinion from those who have used it!
1. SugarBearHair Vitamins
Personal Opinion: Yes, I am in love
Do you remember the coveted blue Scooby Doo fruit snack (decidedly) was everyone's favorite? Here it is, but this time around, it helps promote hair growth and consists of all natural ingredients! After a forever-long search to find hair growth products that actually worked, I stumbled upon these and have not gone back since. Not only are they tasty, but they also last quite a while as each jar should be used for roughly a month at a fair price of $29 per jar. (It is recommended to take two vitamins a day as there are 60 in the jar.) Within three months, I noticed my hair grow about a half an inch to an inch, which is more than what I can say about the many products I tested beforehand.
2. Activated Charcoal Toothpaste
Personal Opinion: No, stick with your Crest 3-D Whitening Toothpaste
Charcoal itself has become increasingly popular today from face washes to even toothpaste. Before I even considered purchasing a toothpaste used with what I connect to as "the rocks my dad would put into the grill to cook burgers," I needed to know what its uses were and what in the world 'activated' meant. After further research, the purpose is quite simple: to detoxify. With this being noted, however, it is used for just about every level of intensive products; from treating poisonings in the medical field to simply cleaning out your pores and lifting surface stains on your teeth. There are discrepancies on whether the cosmetic use of activated charcoal should be medically-deemed as safe for this reason. Knowing me, I decided to give it a shot anyway.
My opinion? Although it was trendy and made the perfect Snapchat to send to my friends, there was not too much pay off in terms of its whitening capabilities. As I previously stated, it only relieves your teeth of surface stains that sit on the outer layer of your enamel as opposed to a bleaching treatment that reaches the deeper surfaces to produce those pearly whites. I would also dedicate a disposable toothbrush for this task as the bristles will be permanently stained. Finally, the clean up was difficult. When trying to wipe up the fallout from my toothbrush, it would smudge in the sink and on the counter top which led me to call my mom and ask for cleaning tricks. (Thank goodness for Moms, am I right?)
3. TLM Color Changing Foundation
Personal Opinion: Not Jeffree Star approved, not going in my shopping cart
If you have not seen Jeffree Star's review of this product, you might be in awe like I was. If you have seen the video, well, then you know the outcome. The selling point of this cosmetic foundation is that it starts off stark white. With repetitive blending, it should change to your exact skin tone thus saving you time and money on 'swatching' shades. After watching the beauty guru's product review, I chose to not even bother with testing and comparing his results like I usually would with other items.
A little insight: Jeffree was getting requests for his opinion on this new, all-in-one-shade foundation that blends in and matches anyone's skin tone. The kicker: his skin tone is quite pale, similar to mine, and the original stark white color did not end up blending in, which measurably, was even paler than him! Even after watching positive video reviews of this product, I would argue that I could not understand the hype because it still did not blend in, contrary to their opinions. My advice would be to stay with what works for you individually or if you are on the hunt for a good foundation, stick to well-known brands. Testers are your best friend!
4. Bubble Masks
Personal Opinion: Super fun, and depending on the brand, definitely worth it
When I first saw this product in Instagram advertisements, I was concerned that it was a mask-mishap. As it turns out, the "bubbly" reaction is actually what it is supposed to do! I love a good face mask, especially at times when my skin decides to go haywire on me from stress and the business of life. However, I have also fallen for the aesthetic of a brand and in the end, it actually made my face break out even more. Everyone has their trusted skincare brands and mine is Elizavecca Milky Piggy. This brand works so well for my skin so I had to try it when I found out that they came out with bubble face masks. Each individual container is priced at around $10 and lasts quite a while!
5. Lip Cupping
Personal Opinion: I wish I had an explanation for the "no way" on this one
I'll admit it, at one point I wished I had Kylie Jenner's lips. Today especially, over-exaggerated features are considered "in." From plump lips to full busts to the large behind and skinny waist combination. Keeping this in mind, there are different ways to achieve these characteristics that I categorize in what I call a 'sensible' and a 'just do not' level. Full lips can be created through lip plumping serums and glosses, injections, and suction.
A few years back, there was the "Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge" that became popular among the younger crowds.
This challenge consisted of taking some kind of cup or small, enclosed item and inhaling all the air within it, causing a vacuum effect to pull blood to your lips which enabled the plumping effect. Little did these challengers know, by going too far above their natural lip line, they would walk away with a mustache bruise that laid right under their noses. In accordance, this act of using suction to pull blood to your lips is extremely destructive to the nerves around that area which can cause intense bruising and ongoing pain. In addition, this process actually strays you further from your desired results. By damaging the elastin and collagen in your lips, it reduces these same proteins that gives your lips firmness and plumpness. If you are looking to plump your lips in a safer way, I would recommend the Lip Injection Extreme from "Too Faced" cosmetics!
6. Bamboo Toothbrushes
Personal Opinion: Sure! Go Green!
I am a huge advocate for sustainability, especially today. If you are wondering why these toothbrushes were even invented, I will put my eco-friendly brain to work for you. Disposable toothbrushes consist mainly of plastic, from the handle, to the gripper, to the bristles. As we all know, most, if not all, plastic cannot be recycled and will end up in landfills and polluting our oceans. With the use of bamboo in toothbrushes, they can be recycled, ground up, and reused for other products. The only frustrating part about most bamboo toothbrushes is that the bristles remain plastic, but at least we are on the right track. They are also similar to plastic toothbrushes in that after about a month or so, they have to be thrown out because they will start to wear down. If you enjoy eco-friendly products or are simply interested in becoming more "green" definitely take a peek at these!
7. Magnetic Eyelashes
Personal Opinion: No, not worth it
As a girl who is genuinely dependent upon false eyelashes, this isn't it. Brands such as Ardell decided to produce eyelashes about two years ago that can be applied through small magnets on the band. In a pack, you are given four pieces, or rather two pairs. One piece is for the bottom and one that you connect on the top of a row of lashes. The point of this invention was to eliminate the use of glue and make increase the ease of applying lases. For the past two years, I have worked at Ulta Beauty and these magnetic contraptions always get returned for the same reason: "They are so difficult to put on." As if applying eyelashes isn't difficult enough, these brands somehow thought that this was the way out. These may be a lifesaver for some, but after observing the majority, there is too much work that goes into making them look natural. If you have the time and patience to practice applying eyelashes the original way with glue and tweezers, I would recommend doing that.
8. Flower Infused Lip Gloss
Personal Opinion: No, it was cute but not purchasing again
For some reason, I saw these all over my social media and I knew I had to have one because of how pretty they are! There are many brands that sell these, however, I feel as though they all do the same, average job. There was not much scent to them and it felt very waxy on my lips. This is not a product that should be used for chapped lips as it is simply made for aesthetic purposes, which I learned the hard way. Depending again on the brand that you choose, once you run out of the gloss you may be stuck with a FAKE flower like I was. Grant it, it was only $7 on Amazon so I cannot judge too harshly. For aesthetic purposes, it is adorable. For functional purposes? Pass.
9. Foot Peeling Masks
Personal Opinion: Yes! Fittingly odd, but can't knock it until you try it!
Now I know what you are thinking, "Is this a mask for your feet?" Why yes, yes it is. For those who are active and have more rough, callused feet, this is your key to the soft feet you have always wanted. Within each pack, there are two masks, one for each foot. After showering, the consumer will put their feet in a shoe-shaped mask and then let it sit for a certain amount of time. As time goes by within that next week, your feet will start to peel more than you ever expected. Gross, right? Yes but no! At the moment, it is not the prettiest site, however, your feet will be smooth and callus-free. I would recommend the brand Peel for any of your foot peeling needs!
10. Electronic Blackhead Extractors
Personal Opinion: Nope! Many brands produce these, not many have high-performance quality
I do not have enough fingers to count the number of times that I have seen advertisements on social media for these hand-held machines. The idea behind it is simple: a suctioning device that pulls out secretions from small blemishes. I had the opportunity to try one of these — my friend was very interested in skin care and struggled with small blemishes such as blackheads. In certain areas of my face, I could agree I have the same issue, which influenced me to try it when it was offered. While it did work to a certain extent, I was doing more work by pushing it down and pulling it around my face to pick up impurities because the vacuum effect was not as strong as I expected. I am sure there are higher-end versions of this product that is dermatologist tested; unless it says exactly that, do not expect much in quality. This is a better option compared to using your fingers to pick at acne, but I would recommend pore strips as an alternative instead.
