Who is Poppy?
Poppy is an internet phenomena known for her artsy, off the wall and insanely disturbing YouTube videos. Poppy is not a YouTuber though, she is a singer. Her newest album Poppy.Computer reminds us that this giant YouTube art project is... genius.
Poppy almost overnight became one of the most talked about people on the internet. Poppy has videos of her reading the whole Bible, teaching people how to curtsy or simply asking questions into the internet void. Poppy has no age. Poppy's name was given to her by the heavens. Yeah, the concept gets crazier the more you watch and trust me, you could watch Poppy videos and interviews for hours and still feel as lost as when you started. She is a brightly colored mystery that has caught the attention of many notables. She's the punchline to many YouTuber's jokes, including Pewdiepie who has over 50 million subscribers. While she can be the butt of a joke or maybe even a giant meme herself, videos regarding Poppy stretch past SNL type material. Poppy is a walking, talking, maybe not even breathing conspiracy theory.
Theories of her being linked to sinister groups or representing a processed pop star trended worldwide across the internet. There are still no clear answer on who Poppy is, but maybe that's the fun of it for her loyal viewers.
For anyone really wondering if this is not a giant hoax and perhaps these theories are real, don't worry she's not in a cult.
She told us herself in this video. It's totally believable, we all feel better right?
I'm not here to write another article on what Poppy could mean or represent because that could be a college level thesis paper within itself. I'm focusing on her album, Poppy.Computer.
I personally like Poppy. I think she's clever, interesting, different and this album has convinced me even further that the Poppy creative team is a force to be reckoned with.
Once you turn on the album you are blasted with electric anesthesia, the first song appropriately kicking off the album is called "I'm Poppy." Without watching Poppy's videos, you would think this album, just a giant acid session or maybe even a way to actually get inside your mind to brain wash you.
The deeper you get into the album, you can see the highlighted trends and themes of the music. Poppy is maybe not human at all but a computer or robot.
At first when the Poppy YouTube channel started to release the "computer" based video material, I was not impressed with this direction. I didn't think it was as unique as her previous theme of content such as her song "Low Life" and the videos of her giving me a virtual hug. Listening to Poppy.Computer, I was able to grasp the whole cohesive unit of the songs and became obsessed.
Poppy's album would be a hard album to have individual singles for. Each song as a stand alone can be difficult to follow unless you're 110% on board with the Poppy bandwagon. When "Computer Boy" and "Let's Make a Video" first came out onto the cybersphere pre-album release, I didn't like them. As I mentioned, I didn't grasp the computer material that Poppy was releasing individually compared to her songs such as "Low Life" and "Everybody Wants to Be Poppy". The album as a single unit connects any blurry spots I had previously. The whole album is like entering another universe. After finishing the album in a single sitting, I entered a different brightly colored alternate dimension. Each song is a punch in the throat about what Poppy is trying to tell you, without spelling it out. Often times, the music gets you so lost in the world of Poppy, you forget what you're even listening to it until a song such as "My Style" says "Poppy is an object, Poppy is your best friend" and it jerks you back into your senses.
The production receives the most credit for this album. While the lyrics are humorous and creative, the variety of musical styles in this album that still felt relevant to the song played before and after is a skill that hasn't been noted for in popular pop albums. Once the song "Moshi, Moshi" hit my ears, my feelings were confirmed on how cool this album is. If you strip the multiple meanings and dark yet fluffy lyrics, Poppy.Computer has music we haven't heard in awhile. That's not something you can say about most hit music. It's fresh, it's different. It's almost a challenge to the music industry to think outside of your comfort zone because whatever Poppy and her team is doing, it's working.
It's hard to pick a favorite song from the album, but "Software Upgrade" could fight it's way to the top of my playlist. I would say my least favorite was "Bleach Blonde Baby", while the lyrics are disturbing and creative, it wasn't a stand out amongst the others.
Poppy has got me on the edge of my seat for her next project. I'm sure I'll be buying my Poppy ring in the near future to show my support. I hope if Poppy does anything, she encourages a trend of people creating material that we've never seen before. Seems like lately we've been stuck in a rut of remaking movies and TV shows, if a celebrity does anything shocking it's sexual or a divorce. As more fans pledge their support to Poppy, the more attention raw originally will get in the industry.
P.S: PLEASE help Poppy find her microphone!
