Pop Punk: Throughout the Years

You were either a Pop Punk kid, an Emo kid, or like me, a combination of both.

Pop punk - a fusion music genre that combines elements of punk rock with elements of pop music. Pop punk typically combines fast punk rock tempos, power chord changes and loud, distorted electric guitars with pop-influenced melodies and lyrical themes.

Pop Punk is a genre that hasn't changed through the years. And like the Emo genre, it's also a genre that started from the 90s/2000s and has made an emotional impact on us rocker kids today. You were either a Pop Punk kid, an Emo kid, or like me, a combination of both.

1995s - 2000s: Green Day

During the 90s, Pop Punk wasn't much of a thing, due to the Alternative scene and the birth of Grunge. Bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden definitely made the 90s music scene big. But there were bands that were the start of the Punk/Pop Punk genre. Green Day is a band that still has the Classic punk roots today. Although today they don't consider themselves as Pop Punk, their famous Dookie and Nimrod albums definitely give a Pop Punk vibe, and current Pop Punk bands still look up to them today.

2000 - 2005: Blink 182, Sum 41, Fall Out Boy

Around the beginning of the 2000s, pop music took over with the rise of Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, and NSYNC. But it was also the rise of Pop Punk bands. Technically this was the year the Pop Punk genre began. And the band that started it all was Blink 182. This trio took over the Pop Punk genre with their famous song "All the Small Things" and "What's My Age Again?" (Aka the nobody likes you when you're 23 song), and to this day they are still known as half of Pop Punk royalty. Sum 41 has that hard Pop Punk that is heard in current Pop Punk bands today. Their song "Fat Lip still starts mosh pits today. Around 2003 was when another band that changed the Pop Punk scene was born. The guys from Fall Out Boy debuted with their album "Take This to Your Grave" and they been changing the game ever since.

2005 - 2010: All Time Low,

During 2005, a bunch of genres took over the rock genre. Just like the 1990s, the genres of Emo, Hardcore, Alternative, and of course Pop Punk all circled around the big genre of Rock. And while FOB, Blink 182, and Sum 41 was still going strong, another band was just getting started. All Time Low was formed in Baltimore, and the members Alex, Jack, Rian, and Zack grew up to Blink and Green Day, aka the Pop Punk legends (Fun Fact: They started as a Blink 182 cover band). And after songs like "Dear Maria, Count Me In" and "Weightless" they also became known as Pop Punk royalty today.

2010 - Present: The Story So Far, State Champs, Real Friends,
Today, Pop Punk is taken over the rock genre, as well as the Alternative and Hardcore genres. Unlike previous decades, there are more Pop Punk bands in the genre. The Story so Far started it all. Formed in California with 2 albums and a recent self titled album, TSSF has a raw and edgy pop punk sound that will definitely get everyone off their seat. State Champs started as a local NY pop punk band, with the sound of Fall Out Boy and Paramore combined. They've recently released their second album along with EP's and their first album. Unlike TSSF, State Champs has more Pop than Punk but you can still crowd surf and mosh pit to their songs so that's all that matters. Real Friends got started in Tinley Park, Illinois. They released 4 EPs, one album, and recently released album. Real Friends is known for their sad (and relatable) songs and has the combination of Pop Punk and underground rock. If you like Brand New, you'll love Real Friends.

So there you have it, a classic rundown of Pop Punk from the 1990s till now. Some of the bands started the game and some of the bands finished the game, but then again when is music ever finished?

Exactly.

I'm serious

There are tons of unisex names that are popular: Taylor, Alex, Bailey, etc. There are also numerous names that are used for both sexes, but they’re not seen as “unisex” yet. People are slowly becoming accustomed to the dual use of these names, but for the most part, in their minds they associate certain names with certain sexes. And that leaves those of us with these names in many awkward situations.

I'm an anthropology major, and I love every minute of it. I couldn't tell you why, but I guess there's just something about studying different lifestyles that absolutely fascinates me. But anthropology majors definitely have our weird sides, especially when you go to a school that is filled with mostly Business and Bio majors. But us weirdos definitely have a lot in common, specifically these 16 things.

Everyone has insecurities, that's just a fact. You didn't ask to be born this way. You didn't ask to inherit the one trait no one else in your family has. And you definitely didn't ask to be this ghostly white. But as soon as you've learned to live with it for a while (less wrinkles later on in life, right? right???) someone has to ruin it for you. They have to flaunt they're perfectly tanned body from Spring Break and hold their sun-kissed skin against yours. But I've had enough... here are the things that perpetually pale individuals are tired of hearing.
