Labor Day is a day of national relief, a great day to know that everyone is at peace with not working (unless you work at a restaurant) and enjoying the end of summer weather with relaxation, but for my sisters and I this Labor Day weekend was filled with some action packed adventure!
On Saturday we traveled through back roads upon back roads to make it to the beautiful Canaan Valley in good ol' Davis WV. It was a serpentine ride down that was filled with beautiful views and the fear of throwing up; nevertheless, it was worth it, we were welcomed with a beautiful view of the valley from our balcony (and of the neighbors of course) plus an only slightly over priced breakfast buffet!
My sisters and I have been planning to make our way through the 16 mile trek up the highest point in West Virginia, so we woke up at the crack of dawn to ensure that we had plenty of time to get from top to bottom, but we were sadly mistaken. First we were found out that it was an hour an a half drive from our resort the the mountain, so the timing was set back a little in the first place. We made our way through more and more twisty roads until we finally reached the pinnacle of twisty roads, the pavement leading to the top of Spruce Knob. Now I know what you're thinking, It doesn't make sense for us to go to the top if we were trying to hike the mountain, so now you see our problem, we were flat out lost. Lost, lost, lost! we needed to find hiking trail at the bottom. but there was only one road to the top, so we just kept going up. After an hour up the 16 mile hill, we finally made it along with a change in plans. We were going to hike in reverse! Contrary to the famous drake lyrics we started from the top... sad I know. But over all it ended up being a beautiful hike, and we were still up pretty early to beat the heat. We ended up making it halfway down the mountain than went back up without any twisted ankles, snake bites, or bear attacks.
By the time we finished that adventure we still had plenty of time to explore further, so we traveled over yonder to good ol' Seneca Rocks were we endured a grueling mile and a half hike up hill to the most beautiful view I have ever seen. Although all of our plans didn't work out like we had expected them to, I had an amazing experience with nature and with my sisters. I might have but in more work than most people did this weekend, but it was so worth it!
