How To Make A Pompom Rug

So, last week, I showed you how to create a pompom with very simple instructions. This week, I’ll show you how to create a rug out of those pompoms. These rugs can be filled in as much as you want and be in any shape, size, or color you want. They’re perfect for a dorm living or just a cute little fuzzy thing to decorate your room. You will need: Non-slip rug backing or latch hook canvas, your pompoms, scissors, and your hands.

1. Set up your rug backing in a comfortable working spot. I used my lap for one of my rugs, but for this rug, I used a table for the purpose for taking pictures. If you use a table, get a chair and clear off an area large enough for your rug.

2. Pick a spot and start tying them on. Since I have a square rug, I started in the top corner. Start by threading the long pieces of yarn that you tied the pompom together with through the backing’s holes. Flip over to the back and tie the pompom into a simple knot or a double knot to be more secure.

3. Follow a pattern or go crazy. For my first rug, I went crazy and just went with random pompoms that I chose from my plastic bags. With the second rug (pictured), I followed a pattern.

4. Continue tying on your pompoms. Just continue tying on more and more pompoms. You might have to go back through and add more between your pompoms just in case it isn’t fluffy enough for you or you can feel the rug backing when you step on it.

5. When done, flip the rug over and tighten the knots and cut the threads down. The long threads of yarn will untangle themselves and knot up with the others. If you want, you can tape the knots down with masking tape to have more security in ensuring that the knots will not come undone.

6. Trim the backing up if there is extra on the ends. This is purely an aesthetic thing. If you want to add more pompoms on the ends that are leftover, go for it. This craft is completely up to you!

7. Enjoy the rug! Put it somewhere where you know it will be appreciated! Your hard work was worth it! Pictured here is my first rug, completed. I ran out of pompoms of a certain color while making the second rug that was pictured prior.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
