If you have been outside or logged onto a computer within the last week, you’ll know the political drama of the presidential race is through the roof. Need I reference Hillary Clinton tweeting "Delete your account" to Donald Trump?
To which Donald Trump replied replied, “How many people did it take to come up with that…”
I think we can all admit that when we first heard Donald Trump was running for president, we laughed. A great thing about America is that as long as you’re over 18 and born in the US, you can run for president. However, that also means that people like Donald Trump can run for president.
This past week, Bernie Sanders did not obtain enough votes to become the democratic nominee. As sad as this makes me, this does not deter my drive to vote. I am not a fan of either of the two nominees, but I believe that I should not throw away my vote. Not voting does not create change.
It didn’t hit me until a couple days ago that we are all so fortunate to be able to vote and share our voice, as crazy as it gets, than to watch our government control us and not listen to the public.
This isn’t a plea for you to vote, but rather a plea for you to think. I have heard that some people are saying “well since Bernie Sanders didn’t get the nomination, I'm just going to vote for Trump because I really hate Hillary.” I get we all have our dislikes but if there’s one thing about politics that’s important, it's listening to people’s ideals and what they stand for. Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have more similar view points than Donald Trump. Furthermore, if you liked Obama, you’ll probably stand by his decision to be a supporter of Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
We’re not always going to run into people we like, that’s how the world works. We have to give and take just as much as others do and that includes the decisions we make. As said, I’m not a fan of either candidate but I’d rather choose a candidate that aligns more with my beliefs rather than someone who is polar opposite. Besides, I’m not a fan of racism.
This is a call for people across the country to think before they vote. Do not give up your voice simply because you didn’t get the outcome you wanted. Focus on the bigger issue at hand: that the next four years is in your hands and so many others'. Think carefully about who you vote for, not out of like or dislike, but with someone who you relate to, whoever that be. Stand together and make change, don’t just break apart and pout.
