It's so easy to get caught up in drama and media hype during election time. What one candidate said about another instantly translates to headlines and breaking news stories. However, it is important to focus on the magic of actual voting.
This was my friends and I's first election being old enough to vote. We had always taken part in mock elections or online BuzzFeed polls, but we had never been able to actually make our vote count until this year. Just knowing my voice was going to matter helped a lot during campaign season. I stayed up late to watch the debates, different news stations, and online articles. I read up as much as I could in order to make the most educated choices I was able to make.
Then came the actual act in voting. I had no idea that early voting was an option so on November 7th, I was in line at my nearest polling place. The line wrapped around the entire building and then outside into the courtyard. It was insane, but an experience I enjoyed none the less. Being a part, and having a voice was truly magical. And here is the part most adults take for granted. The fact that as citizens, we are able to take place in a process that actually elects our leader. We don't have to abide by lineage or royalty. We, the people, get to choose who we want to represent our country. Sometimes the people for whom we vote get chosen, and other times they do not.
So, with half of the nation upset, we need to come together as a whole again in order to achieve any progress as a nation. The people, through the electoral college, spoke. Nothing is going to be achieved by working against any politician, especially the president, to better our country. As a nation, we need to work with our politicians to reach a happy medium, this takes time. In the meantime we need to support each other through this transition. Whether you are happy, upset, or indifferent about the outcome of the election, as long as we take care of each other America will continue to be the best nation in the world.
