You have all probably had that crazy uncle at that one family reunion that comes up to you and says, "So, are you Republican or Democrat?" I think it's funny in a country where we are meant to be free and equal and have an abundance of thought and discovery, we are still segregated and separated by the simple statement of, "So, are you Republican or Democrat?". George Washington warned of political parties in his Farewell Speech of 1796,"... One of the expedients of Party to acquire influence, within particular districts, is to misrepresent the opinions & aims of other Districts. You cannot shield yourselves too much against the jealousies & heart burnings which spring from these misrepresentations. They tend to render Alien to each other those who ought to be bound together by fraternal Affection."
And there you have it folks, the first President of the United States had it right all along. Political parties alienate us from each other, they only exist to separate political thought and views. No matter what the pundits say about if the GOP or the Democrats can both work together, IT CANNOT WORK.
We have to begin to understand that we, as Americans, are all on the same team. Political party affiliation has to be eliminated totally for our country to become what it once was. We all have to join Team America and make our country great for our citizens, and for the people that want to be American. We have to fight for everyone, no matter your race, gender, sexual orientation, or religious affiliation. So, who will take the courage and fight against the system that has taken so much away from our citizens? Only time will tell before we can say an independent is elected to office, any office, and when that day comes, we will see what a true democracy looks like.
