Lamentations Of An Oppressed People

Poem: "Battered Black Lives"

Thanks to technology and it's availability we are able to view the ugly truths of our reality. When will the abuse end?

We live in a country where the justice system bends, it bends to accommodate the majority.
When will it end?

People condemn to a life of fear and uncertainty, for another to feel a sense of security.
When will the abuse end?

Mothers weeping for their sons, and another family left without a protector.
When will it end?

To who do we turn when the sworn "protectors" inflict the harm? Where do we seek refuge in this storm?
When will the abuse end?

Everyday another hashtag is created, everyday another soul gets tainted. Tainted with hate, malice, and anger.
When will it end?

Then in the name of justice they criminalize, in an attempt to justify. Justify what is exposed for the world to see as their lack of humanity.
Someone please tell me when will it end?

We protest, but all they see is a group of hooligans screaming on tv. They see our cry for help but still find another way to kill us dead.

Please someone, anyone, tell me when will the abuse END!
Can they not see our humanity? Will they continue to drive us to the brink of insanity?
God knows this needs to end!

My heart weeps for the recent acts of police brutality. while this issue is directly linked to the Black Lives Matter Movement, the issue transcends race but is a crime against humanity! It is outrage that police officers sworn to protect and serve the community continue to snatch lives and these actions go unpunished. This is specifically the case with young black and other minority groups.

Is this the United States that we live in? A country so quick to police other countries, my concern is who will monitor the actions of this self-proclaimed policing country? Regardless of the claims made against the victims; the actions of the police officers exceeded the force necessary. It is embarrassing and completely ludicrous that a country of this caliber still struggle with administering justice to policemen and police women who continue to abuse their station.

Hate and anger continue to seep in to the souls of the men and women left to grieve. Creating a cycle of police hate and fear. A dark fear. Fear like a cornered wild animal. Fear that will elicit anything to ensure survival. Can we handle that kind of retaliation? A woman or man with nothing to lose will go above and beyond to stop the oppression. Is this the world we want tomorrows generation to live in? Who will protect us from the protectors?

This needs to stop we need a change! All lives mater! Then stop taking black lives! I we matter so much make the effort to preserve instead of destroying us. I fear for the storm brewing. A volcano gives little warning before it erupts. Radical groups on both sides of the spectrum are giving warning signs. We need to nip it in the bud while we can.

We are humans too, we matter too. Stop oppressing us because we need freedom too!

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
