6 Things They Don't Tell You About Being A Political Science Major

It's all politics, baby.

6 Things They Don't Tell You About Being A Political Science Major

If you're like me, you have literally always loved politics. It became your obsession when you were young, and has only grown the older you got. Some of your earliest memories include fighting with the neighborhood kids about George Bush, and telling your daycare teacher that you thought he was an alcoholic.

Maybe that was just me. Anyway, most of my fellow Political Science majors can't really remember a time when they didn't care. Sure, the 2016 election drove a lot of young people into the world of politics, but for us, this was old hat. But really, what is it like being a Political Science major?

1. Your internet search history? Yeah, that's whack.

Giphy

A lot of what we talk about is weird. And often, the things we research are distasteful. In order to be active participates in class, as with any major or subject, it requires us to seek out knowledge. So, that's why you find yourself falling down a rabbit hole of reading about the theology of ISIS or learning more about why the families of Sandy Hook are suing Remington.

2. You get asked a lot of dumb questions.

Giphy

"Why do you care?" "How do you feel about X issue?" "Will Roe v Wade be overturned?" "Trump?"

And my answers

1- Because I have a heart

2-Do you really want to get into this

3- I hope not

4- That man bad

3. Multiple choice exams? Don't know her.

Giphy

Yeah, sorry to those who wanted this all to be true and false questions, but that just doesn't happen. In this major, your writing skills are almost as important as knowing the content itself. You better learn how to write a good and thoughtful paper. You also should be able to write these papers in less than 50 minutes, because Blue Book Exams will become an ever-present part of your life.

4. Law School?

Giphy

Everyone assumes that this major is just prep for law school. First of all, ask anyone who knows ANYTHING about law school and you will hear that there is no pre-rec for it, just get good grades. Honestly, while I have met a lot of students who do see law school in their future, some of them do want to just go to grad school and do field work. Just like every other major, this isn't one size fits all.

5. Internships, Internships, Internships

Giphy

It's all about who you know. The more experience you have, the more wanted you are. That is why, even during your freshmen year, everyone will stress how important it is to make connections, just so you're prepared for that sought-after internship.

6. Debates. Debates everywhere

Giphy

Yeah, in every class, every club, every friend group. ANYTHING can be debated over, because all we know is how to argue. You can watch a peaceful conversation about the weather turn into a debate on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Also, pro tip: Know what is happening in Israel. It'll just make your life easier.

Really, like any major, Political Science is what you make it. If you love it, you love it. If you hate it.. well maybe you should switch.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
