This past week, the PokemonGo Plus was realeased- a companion to the app that took the world by spam this summer, PokemonGo.
Being the nerds we are, my boyfriend and I were in the front of the line at GameStop on Friday morning to take one of the five available devices home with us. (It's worth noting there actually was a line- but mostly because NBA 2k17 had released the previous night.)
So, among many negative reviews, what is the real person review of the plus?
Well, for one, I've gained three levels just in this weekend.
If you want to grind pokemon, build up a supply of pokeballs, link your device, and go! I wore mine at work Saturday and caught 20 pokemon during my shift. Sure, a lot of them were weedle and pidgey, but think of all the stardust you will be putting towards evolution and combat power!
Also, the greatest feature, egg hatching- the device links with GPS in your phone and processes your distance moved and counts it towards both egg hatching and the new buddy feature that came with the most recent update.
Everyone seems to be saying you catch less pokemon- but I feel like more pokemon are appearing to begin with, so the losses balance it out.
The biggest reaction I seem to hear is regarding the price- at $35, it is a commitment to an app that many people are not ready to make. But, in a world where the Pokemon games released for Nintendo systems are around $40, I don't think it much of an investment- after all, I already pre-ordered Pokemon: Moon, which is set to release in November.
So where are the negatives?
Well, for one, you have to constantly run Bluetooth on your phone for the device to be connected. Along with that, the app must run in the background on your phone and sometimes will still connect. Occasionally, it will disconnect and you have to reconnect it.
Another big issue that seems to happen is that when you run out of regular pokeballs, you cannot use your other types of balls to catch pokemon unless you open your phone and use it.
Overall, I think the device is a revolutionary companion, even if it has room for improvement. I definitely think it is a reasonable purchase for any pokemon fan, if for nothing but to occupy time until November.
