Pokémon Go: Is It Worth Catching 'Em All?

"Hey Mom, I'm lost...I was catching Pokémon."

Text message responses are becoming delayed, leaving significant others feeling angry and unloved. People who may not have exercised in a while are now jogging around town with another goal in mind than to become fit. A Wyoming teen’s fun adventure was cut short due to the discovery of a dead body. And young adults are becoming even more distracted by their handheld devices which are resulting in them obtaining injuries. If you have no clue what I’m talking about, then becoming a gym leader was probably not one of your childhood dreams. Yes, I am talking about the craze that has gotten social media all worked up—catching Pokémon with the new Pokémon Go app.

As hilarious memes began to fill my social media news feeds, and posts of friends going about their day while trying to capture these critters in peculiar places, I too decided to see what the fuss was all about. I deleted some lame apps on my crappy phone (I can learn a new language some other time) in order to make room for the new adventures that awaited me, and installed the Pokémon Go app from the Google play app store—it’s free!

After I made my character with the small amount of customization that is currently available, I went off to hunt—or so I thought. Sadly, the server was down (this appears to be happening quite frequently) which left me having to try again later.

After a period of time that felt like hours, I gave it another go. Once the screen finished loading, I was now on a screen with a map/GPS view of my current surroundings, and around me were starter pokémon. I went on to capture a Squirtle by throwing a pokéball at it. A few minutes later, I journeyed downstairs within my house, and captured a bunch of Rattatas (rat-like pokémon) and Spearows (bird-like pokémon). Within two days of playing, I had captured many of these two specific pokémon which appear to have made themselves feel at home around my location. But Seeing as I haven’t been able to play this as much as I would like to, I have yet to experience a battle or visit the Pokéstop which happens to be a statue (whose existence I did not know of until now) located near a hazmat service facility not too far from house (I did not know this facility was nearby either). Needless to say, I have YET to venture to this Pokéstop, but I probably will in due time.

Overall, I had a pretty good time playing Pokémon Go, and I believe that future updates will make this game even more desirable. Although some people are getting a few cuts and bruises due to not paying attention to their surroundings, and those in relationships are becoming a bit suspicious of their significant others leaving the house at 12 a.m. to wander the streets in search of night pokémon, it is something that can help take your mind away from these tragic events that have currently plagued our nation, for some well needed self-care. “Pikachu I choose you!”

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
