The Art of Poetry

Here is why poetry must never die.

Poetry is an art that is much different than the rest. Most of us have a problem with being open, but this is the one thing poets love doing. Poets are bold and raw and brave and powerful.

I admire poetry. I wish I could write better poetry. But recently, a poetry firework went off in my chest, and now I am back to writing. It may not be good, but it is mine, and that is something.

Truth be told, I do not think there is a such thing as “bad poetry”.

A friend of mine once told me, “Always be proud of your work. No matter how good or bad it is, it came from the heart and that is amazing on its own.”

Writing an essay or an article does not take as much effort and precision to me, as poetry does.

All writing requires thought and structure, but the irony of poetry is that it does not have to make sense or have perfect grammar, and that is why it is so difficult sometimes. Because a poem has to make you feel something. It has to touch you and evoke some sort of emotion. Poetry is not for normal people. It is for the wild, subtly insane, gut-tugging, heart-shattering creative little souls, who want nothing more than to vent our frustrations and triumphs through a different outlet.

I think someone reading poetry to me at night is more beautiful than someone singing me a lullaby. The honesty sounds better to me, even if the person has a raspy voice.

However, songs are poetry as well. Rap is rhythm and poetry. It is talent. It is discussing a rain drop and discussing the bittersweet feeling of falling in love simultaneously.

The English language is a playground.

Explore the monkey bars.

Poetry has opened up new doors for me. Reading poetry with an open mind can give you several perspectives and interpretations.

Said the shotgun to the head is my bedtime story.

Hamlet’s to be or not to be still bewilders me, as it should.

I even want to name my daughter Annabelle Lee.

If you find that burst of inspiration, be sure to let it out. Write it on your hand if you can’t find paper. If you don’t have a pen on you, well then you’re probably not a writer to begin with.

But get your thoughts out from your mind and onto a page.

Let the world hear.

We’re all ears.

Start writing kid.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
