The creaky floorboards on a summer day
And the way it took my breath away.
Trying as I might to be quiet,
I let out a giggle of anticipation.
What it is like to be young
And completely carefree.
I hid behind a desk,
While you counted 1,2, and 3.
When you reached 10,
I learned not to react.
I counted to myself and tried not to shout.
At the time,
I didn't want you to find me.
Minutes ticked down as you creeped around.
You checked the nooks and crannies of the cafeteria.
You forgot the unfortunate smell of the garbage out back,
And continued looking for me through and through.
Finally you heard a voice in the classroom.
How you laughed and how I was surprised
When you found me there.
We raced to the playground and counted our days.
You traced letters in the sand,
While I read the messages in the clouds.
We parted ways, promising to meet again.
Now, I'm asking one small thing,
Can you find me again?
