In the late hours
of a long day,
or the early hours
as the case may be,
when the line between
late at night
and early in the morning
depends entirely upon
your own ability to plan
or your struggles with procrastination,
upon your claim to night owl heritage
or an early bird lineage
The split between
day and night
at these hours
seems only tethered
to personal experience,
to semantics
and personal differences
Have you really passed into tomorrow
without waking up to meet it?
How much have you squeezed from this day
only to be already choking the pulp from the next,
stealing sand, precious sand
from this morn
just to prolong your night?
Is this temporal ambivalence
of any relevance
to any other species?
By which I mean
the morning people
what see me
Don’t you think
that if you would just go to bed at a normal time
you wouldn’t have
to ask yourself these questions
in the first place?
