Salt Peanuts
Crispy, Crunchy Munching Shells
Eaten whole with the Peanuts, a taste so swell
A testament to home in the summertime
Briney, chewy casing shells
Shucked away from the Southern treat
Eaten while waiting for barbecued meat
Pull-tabs and bottle caps
Crackle on the wind
A hand sifts through a bowl
of nutty, earthy goodness
Golden nuggets seemingly made for Coke
Plink along the glass, the percussion
of refreshment
On a stereo in the back blasts
the sweet, hot popped boppin'
of Dizzy and the Bird
Salt Peanuts, Salt Peanuts!
Salt Peanuts, Salt Peanuts!
This is a reflection on the versatility of peanuts, roasted, boiled and plopped in coke bottles and is a dream of summer, when all of these treats can be especially enjoyed. This is an attempt at a beat poem in free verse that focuses on consonant quality.
