This was going to start out as an article which would have apologized to every girl I have ever hurt intentionally or unintentionally. I think that, as feminists, it's important to understand when you've hurt other women through your actions or your words.
None of these lines is referring to anything specific, but the sincerity behind each apology is real. As women, we should be willing to help and listen to one another when our stories are scary or dark or confusing. We should be going out of our way to make sure that every woman has her voice heard.
I think every woman should know that she's beautiful, strong, smart, brave, kind and loved which is why I wrote this poem this week!
To Every Girl, I'm Sorry
To the girl who gets catcalled every day on the way home from school, I'm sorry.
I'm sorry I never stood up to the men with hungry eyes and tongues that shoot fiery insults disguised as sweet compliments towards you.
To the girl that wears black, over-sized hoodies every day, I'm sorry.
I should have told you that you're beautiful in every color.
To the girl that I judged based on her outfit choices, I'm sorry.
I should have realized that your body is yours and you're allowed to wear whatever you want if it makes you feel confident.
To every girl I compared myself to, I'm sorry.
I should have been proud of the fact that we're all unique and perfectly imperfect in our own ways.
I should have celebrated the fact that we're different.
That we're beautiful.
That we're strong.
Smart.
Brave.
Kind.
Loved.
To every girl that has ever felt alone, I'm sorry.
I should have given my voice to help you. I should have held out my hands.
To every girl that has been called "over-dramatic," I'm sorry.
I'm sorry I never took your story into account. Even if it was the truth.
To every girl who has spoken her truth, for it to be strangled in front of her, I'm sorry.
I'm sorry no one listened to you. I'm sorry no one believed you.
I'm sorry.
I can be better.
We can be better.
