Poetry on Odyssey: Celebration

Kings Day In Mexico.

Poetry on Odyssey: Celebration

I got to spend the last couple of weeks in Mexico, and was of course immediately drawn back into the color of culture of Oaxaca.

I love the country and it was so great to spend some time eating as much food as possible, spending time walking through markets, looking at the beautiful desert and the mountains....

I also got to be in Mexico for Kings Day, which celebrates the arrival of the Wise Men during the Christmas story. So here's a poem about Mexico and Kings Day.

We breathe in guayaba and canela,
scent of ponche rising over the fire,
bocote and pine, our laughter
rises over the crackle and the slap of cards.
In the morning, the camels
will slip over the mountains, bearing gifts.
We'll empty out our dusty shoes
and eat homemade bread, rosca de Reyes,
with plastic babies buried in the dough
symbols of the Christ, signalling fellowship.

Now, I realize that you can't fully be there for other people unless you're there for yourself, too. You can't show up for others until you're willing to show up for yourself.

Here are five things everyone should learn in order to be a better friend to themselves. These steps are hard, but they're so worth it.
