Even if one does not consider writing to be a hobby, writer's block has likely happened. I experience it often, fueled by exhaustion and frustration from the rest of my day. I find myself struggling for a subject of any kind, but aching to write.
In times such as this, I often turn to poetry.
I prefer the freestyle format personally, but I doubt it would matter. With poetry I am often able to pick a single thought or general subject, put a pen to paper, and just start writing. Not every poem is a masterpiece, but being able to write at all is a relief.
Maybe there isn't progress on my other writing projects, but at least I wrote something and was able to be creative for a little while.
It chips away at my writer's block and lets my mind wander instead of being so focused on everything I have to do that day (trust me, that's usually a long list). Sometimes it just ends up being a sappy poem about my boyfriend, but I wrote something, and that's pretty important to me.
Writing keeps me sane, and lets me speak in a way I do not feel like I can during causal conversation. There are times where I start with something small and end up pouring my soul into the poem. That's the beauty of writing: I'm never sure where I'll end up as a result.
So next time you can't find the words, try a poem. You would be surprised.
