6 Poems You Should Read Today
Dawn Lanuza

In the midst of my 100 books in a year journey, I've stumbled upon some amazing poetry pieces. Whether by the recommendations of friends or by sheer luck, I've come across some of the most beautifully written words I've ever read. So, here is a list of some poems I've stumbled across on my travels through the poetry realm. Share your favorites with me in the comments down below!

1. "Unasked Question 1"--The Last Time I'll Write About You by Dawn Lanuza

Was I a secret not worth sharing
Or
Was I fact not worth telling?

We all have that one love in our life that changes who we are forever. When they leave, we feel like we're just never going to forget the way they said your name or other little quirks about them. This book is an entire tribute to a love gained and lost, wrapped up in a nice little package that we can all relate to.

2. "Elements II"--The Chaos of Longing by K.Y. Robinson

you are a natural
phenomenon--
not a natural disaster

Really, this entire collection of poetry spoke to me on such a profound level. Filled with poems about love, sex, lust, self-love and so many other topics, this find was absolutely amazing to me. But this poem, in particular, found me on a day where I wasn't feeling "me". Read this poem and love yourself.

3. "How to Kill Yourself without Hurting Anyone"--Our Numbered Days by Neil Hilborn

Don't.

This is it, the whole poem. In its simplicity, its message is astounding and straightforward, which is something most of us tend to not be when discussing suicide. This whole poetry collection will have you crying, laughing, relating, and having those ahh moments when your life makes total sense. Read it.

4. "Reminders"--Whiskey Words & a Shovel II by R.H. Sin

you kill your future
by mourning the past

Have you ever read truer words? We spend so much time harboring negative feelings about that ex that wasted our time or that time we made the wrong choice. But what are we missing when we spend so much time looking into the past? You can't go back in time and change history, so take it, learn from it, and move on.

5. "The Body"--Preparing my Daughter for Rain by Key Ballah

Your
body
is a gracious land,
show it mercy.
Always.

We live in a world where people walk around exposing their bodies or hiding them. Body positivity is such a hard thing to come by and when it does come around, someone always has to ruin it. Your body is your temple. You get to choose who has access to it and who doesn't. Never be afraid to speak up and use your voice. Your body is 100% yours. Always.

6. "You"--The Princess Saves Herself in this One by Amanda Lovelace

you
did
absolutely
nothing
to
deserve
it.
-fuck rape culture

If you want to feel empowered, this is the poetry collection to read. I fell in love with this poem in particular. With everything going on in society today and all the rape cases that are shoved under the rug and the girls ashamed of themselves for being raped, this one is for you. You did not deserve it, you did not ask for it, and you are still very much accepted. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

So that concludes my list of must-read poems. Grab any of these books and feel just as inspired as I did and continue to do. Happy reading.

April Ludgate
NBC Universal

Everyone who is in college right now, or has ever been, knows the struggle of pulling in the strings at the last second. It seems impossible, and you have to do a LOT of things in order to assure your future for the next semester.

April Ludgate, historically, is a very annoyed person, and she doesn't hide it. Of all the times that I binged and re-binged "Parks and Rec," her attitude relates more and more to me.

To The Cheerful Person On Their Rainy Days, You Are Valid

The world is not always sunshine and rainbows, and you do not have to be, either.

Ask friends of mine to name a quality about me, and one a lot them will point out the fact that I am almost always smiling. I like to laugh and smile -- not to quote Buddy the Elf in April, but smiling is my favorite! It is probably my favorite go-to expression. However, what a lot of people do not see is that I have my down days. I have days when smiling and laughing is a real struggle, or when I have so much on my plate that going out of my way to behappy takes more effort than I have stored in me. Be it a symptom of college and growing up or a facet of life, I cannot always be content.
