Summer. It’s the time of the year where everyone buys new swimsuits, constantly travels, moves back home, and forgets all their normal responsibilities. With all of these trips, especially to the beach, people like to post pictures flaunting their sun-kissed beach bodies. Most of us have that sort of picture in our mind where we show off every flawless portion of our body for our whole social media world to see.
But if you’re like me, that mental picture isn’t the reality. While I certainly applaud those who feel much more confident in their skin than I do, there are many things that keep me from that ideal physique. So here’s a little poem that I’d like to dedicate to the summer body I want but will never have:
To my “Summer Body”
I see all the pictures,
I see them pose.
I see them standing at the ocean
With sun-kissed glows.
They want to show everyone
How great their body is.
But the rest of us still sit at home
Taking a Buzzfeed quiz.
I really want to be out there,
But I really like food too.
I also like watching Netflix,
Especially Doctor Who.
I’m really pale
And I know that’s not a great excuse.
But I also like not turning red
And enduring the sun’s abuse.
I get a text saying,
“Hey, wanna get some food?”
Of course, I want to go out and eat.
What about you too?
Tacos are amazing,
And so is Chinese.
I especially love Sonic
And burgers with extra cheese.
I also love Starbucks,
And getting their coffee.
I can have just one.
Okay, maybe two or three.
I really want a great body.
I promise, I do.
But I really like my food
And being inside too.
The sun is overbearing,
The gnats are there even in the breeze.
Bugs like to bite me
Even when it’s 108 degrees.
The air is really humid
And it makes me sweat a lot.
People like that about summer,
And I reply, “I think not!”
People think it’s fun to tan,
But not when you’re stark white.
You have to use SPF 100
And you’ll still glow at night.
So I say to you, summer,
Good luck, you tried.
The sun can beat down on other’s skin,
But not mine because I’ll fry.
The rest of you can have the summer body,
But as for me, I’ll stay inside.
I’ll be pale and enjoy my tacos and Netflix
Until the day I die.
