She asked him, "may I love you?"
as she moved his book-bag
and sat down next to him
he stared out a window and
admired the sky
he noticed an empty nest
resting in a tree
She asked him, "may I love you?"
as they rode their bikes
on a luminous Saturday afternoon
he rode past her and
saw an egg sleeping in a tree
She asked him, "may I love you?"
as she paraded across the turf field
to receive her diploma
he looked over her shoulder and
saw a bird singing to himself
She asked him, "may I love you?"
as she danced down the aisle
donning the dress of an angel
he locked eyes with her as
two birds flew above them
A storm came and
his eyes began to flood
he held onto her question and
wondered what to say
so, with a deep breath
he slid a ring on her finger
and replied, "yes you may"
