Dear PNMs (Potential New Members)

First off, thank you so much for deciding that you wanted to come out for recruitment. I know recruitment can be a time commitment and I know that every sorority appreciates you taking time out of your life to come to this exciting weekend. This is my first time going through recruitment as a member and I'm really excited and nervous to get the chance to talk to some of you. I know a lot of you might feel nervous about coming out for recruitment, especially if you don't really know a lot about Greek life. I just wanted to tell you a few things about myself, and Greek Life.

I am not going to say which organization I am in, but if you have me on social media, or know who I am then you probably already know. When I went through recruitment, I thought I knew exactly which organization I wanted to be in and that no one could tell me anything different. After the first day when I didn't get the sorority I wanted for Philanthropy day, I was a little upset, but realized it was for the best. I honestly can't picture myself in any other organization. I just wanted to tell you that you should try to keep an open mind, give every organization a chance, and let them get to know you.

Another thing I want to mention is that you should just be yourself. We aren't looking for a certain "type" of girl. There are so many different types of people in each organization which is what makes being a part of Greek Life so much fun. If people are judging you and saying that you aren't the type of girl that can be in a sorority, please do not listen to them. If someone is telling you that you're paying for your friends, please do not listen to that person either. You are paying for an experience. If we didn't have fees, we wouldn't have as many opportunities to do fun things with our sisters and other organizations.

Try to have fun at recruitment, It really is an exciting time. It's been almost a year since I went through recruitment as a PNM and so much has happened between then and now. I have met some amazing people and role models within my chapter and have made some life long friends. Just know that you have made a great decision signing up for recruitment and I can't wait to see where you all end up on bid day.

Sincerely,

An excited sister

We don't buy into these... just like how we don't buy our friends.

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
