If you haven’t heard of P!nk's newest single “Beautiful Trauma,” you’re definitely missing out. The song though isn’t what’s gotten people shocked. It’s her very colorful music video that’s paired with the song! If you haven’t seen the music video yet, I suggest you go watch it before reading this analysis of it. There will be spoilers for the video. You’ve been warned!
"We were on fire. I slashed your tires. It's like we burned so bright we burned out. I made you chase me. I wasn't that friendly. My love, my drug, we're f*cked up."
Well. It’s certainly a P!nk song. We can already see a glimpse of what this song is most likely about: a volatile couple. The interesting thing though is listening to the lyrics, while watching the video. The pop singer wakes up in a beautiful pink room and pretty much glides over to Channing Tatum, who is asleep peacefully in a matching single bed.
The next few scenes let us see a glimpse into their daily life routine. We see P!nk vacuuming the living room, while Channing is on the couch, reading the paper with his feet propped up. Looking at the clothes that they’re wearing, we are to assume that the video's inspiration comes from the 1950s. The wife is doing the housework while the husband relaxes and seemingly doesn’t do much help. If we look closely as well, we see that when P!nk is ironing Channing's clothes, we see him holding up the paper up higher, blocking his view of her. The best part? There seems to be a scandalous woman on the cover of the paper.
"...You waking up to remember I'm pretty. And when the chemicals leave my body, Yeah, they're gonna find me in a hotel lobby..."
So, it is safe to assume that the wife could possibly be taking some kind of drugs to deal with her “housewife” lifestyle and even perhaps her marriage.
We continue seeing that she burns his food, while he adds some kind of liquor to his coffee, and as she dances over to the kitchen cabinet and opens it, we see an ample supply of what looks to be prescription medicine bottles. As we watch her take a few pills, the lyrics ring out,
“It was you. The pill I keep taking. The nightmare I’m waking…My perfect rock bottom, my beautiful trauma…”
After she takes many pills, she seems to be much happier. So much so, that she and Channing start to dance in the kitchen. What is unique about this music video, is that if someone watched the video on mute, it could be perceived that she is taking pills to deal with her awful marriage. According to the lyrics though, the husband is her drug that she continuously takes.
The next few lyrics go right back to showing how violent their relationship is:
“You punched a hole in the wall and I framed it. I wish I could feel things like you…”
She’s possibly explaining that even when her husband lashes out and does something awful, she tries to put a positive light on it and try to make it not look so bad. She continues to say, “I wish I could feel things like you…” One way to look at this is that perhaps she has become numb to everything around her, to the point that she doesn’t react to things like she should. Compared to her husband, who obviously shows when he gets angry, she could be saying that she wishes that she could feel as strongly as he does.
And then we get a twist in the video.
We see P!nk skip in their bedroom with some laundry, and when she opens the closet door, we see Channing Tatum wearing a dress and elbow high gloves. He looks mortified, but instead of P!nk looking angry or upset, she starts to grin! She brings him out of the closet and applies lipstick to him. While this scene is happening, we hear the lyrics,
“Everyone’s chasing that holy feeling, and if we don’t stay later we’ll blow out…”
The next scene, we see the couple dancing again, but this time Channing is still wearing his yellow dress, and P!nk is rocking a suit and tie with a matching fedora.
It is no secret that P!nk is an avid supporter of the LGBTQ community. We could see this as a nod towards said community, with her telling them, “I see you. There’s nothing wrong with who you are. Everyone’s trying to find happiness.” Whether that was her meaning behind the scene, we can’t know for sure until the artist herself comments on it. This is simply an assumption.
Following through to the chorus, we see the couple drinking at a bar together. They seem to continue to drink until they’re both heavily intoxicated. Same as when she takes the pills and when they gender swap their clothing, they begin to dance again. They stumble around as they dance, but it seems to blend into the choreography seamlessly.
The thing to realize is that every time they have danced together in this video, they’ve revealed a little “dark secret” of their life. They danced when she was taking pills when she found him wearing a dress, and now whilst they are very drunk. We could take this as that they only get along because of their shared skeletons in the closet.
And to top off the entire video, we see Channing Tatum tied up on the couch, with P!nk wearing a skintight black outfit in front of him. It’s a very intimate scene that’s sure to grab everyone’s attention.
And when we thought it couldn’t get any better, we see a second woman lying on the bar. They continue to roll around on the floor together, which we are perhaps to assume symbolizes their shared personal life. Yet, another thing that brings them closer together that is known to be frowned upon to the public.
The video ends with them going back to bed, everything looks to be as normal as what we were first introduced to. The video and the song seemed to compliment each other perfectly, had a nice flow to it, and with some twists here and there. Everything that has been analyzed here is purely opinion and observation. Everyone could listen to the song and watch the video, and each person has a different opinion about the meaning. It’s a very catchy and upbeat song paired with a very interesting and unique video. Were there any possible meanings that weren't mentioned?
