There is one single word that, when it is sent in a text message by itself, immediately makes most people cringe. This word is hey. The 'hey' text usually leads to meaningless conversation. The message can also have many different meanings behind it. The context of these messages are usually unknown but can usually be inferred.
When the 'hey' text comes between the hours of 7 and 10 in the morning, it usually means 'hello' or 'good morning.' Around the noon hour, the 'hey' text usually means 'bring me food' or 'let's grab a bite to eat.' When the 'hey' text is sent any time from 3 to 9, it usually means 'let's go grab a drink or two (or seven).' A 'hey' text received any time after 11 pm is usually for one thing only, Netflix and chill (emphasis on the 'chill').
These messages, no matter the time of day, are not cute. They are not flirty (and no amount of y's on the end of 'hey' will change this), nor are they persuasive in any way. In fact, they are the opposite. The receiver of the message is automatically going to want to accept whatever you're offering less. When you send the 'hey' text, and mean it as a morning hello, then just say 'good morning!' (Extra points if you say good morning, beautiful.) If you want to grab a bite to eat, then just say so!
Step up your texting game, guys! Send an opening message that sparks conversation. Get to know your texting buddy a little better. Ask them questions. Tell them stories. Here's a thought: call them and talk on the phone! The worst that could happen is they don't answer, which is something you risk with a text message as well. Tell them about your dream last night or your plans for the weekend. Ask them if they would like to grab a bite to eat or go on a road trip.
Talking to other people doesn't have to be boring! If having a conversation on the phone simply doesn't work for you, add flair to your messages. Add emojis, pictures, or gifs. Not only do these make sending and receiving text messages more fun, but it also helps portray the context behind the message. Whatever you do, just please, I'm begging, stop sending the 'hey' text.
