Native Americans and their allies are mad.
Protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline, which would transport crude oil from North Dakota to Illinois, have been happening for months. This pipeline is scheduled to be built underneath the Missouri River, risking poisoning the water. This river provides drinking water for many Native American tribes, so the possibility of poisoning water could not only be catastrophic to the environment, but also to thousands of people's lives. This pipeline would also disturb sacred Native American sites.
So let's just say the Standing Rock Sioux have every single reason to be mad. And now they have ANOTHER reason to be upset;
On Friday November fifth, the United States Army Corps of Engineers informed the leaders of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe that they would be arresting all peoples that are still in the Oceti Sakowin Standing Rock camp as of December fifth.
In true American tradition, our government and military are not upholding treaties made hundreds of years ago, treaties that recognize Native American Lands as sovereign states. How can these oil companies and the government do this morally? Is it really just because of American society being focused around fossil fuels? It seems so.
We need to stand with Standing Rock. What is happening to Native Americans are acts of injustice. Please do your part and sign THIS PETITION with 350.org to tell President Obama that you want him to stop the building of the Dakota Access Pipeline. You can make a difference! Make your voice heard!
Please keep the protestors at Standing Rock in your hearts, as many of them are planning on staying at the camp and will be facing prosecution. They are not giving up, so neither can we.
Mni Wicioni. Water is life. Don't let the government and oil companies take life away.
