You Came Into My Life Like A Pleasant Surprise

Some people struggle with the idea of love and sometimes get carried away with unrealistic notions of love, I mean, haven't we all at some point? When I think of love or “the one” I remember the words of Bob Marley,

“He’s not perfect. You aren’t either, and the two of you will never be perfect. But if he can make you laugh at least once, causes you to think twice, and if he admits to being human and making mistakes, hold onto him and give him the most you can.”

I am a hopeless romantic so I have read quite a few romance novels and watched several sappy movies and shows. Each has taught me and told me something different about love. (Yes, you can actually learn from all these crazy chick flicks and your Netflix "Vampire Diaries" binges.)

So, my question for you: is love perfect like in our fairytales? Or is it mortal like Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet?” Or is it messy like Mr. Big and Carrie in Sex in the City? So the question still remains, how do you know you are in love? What is love?

I almost laugh when asking, because, isn't that the question of the century!?

Love to me is an energy that wakes you up to the true beauty of being alive. Until I experienced it, I was just passing time, days would just go by and I would just . . . exist. When I met "the one" I felt like my life had truly started. He inspired me to be the best version of myself. He did not quote love letters like Big from Sex and the City. But he didn’t need to, because sometimes a smile is just enough to convey the same message.

This is my poem for love:

You make me feel alive

You came into my life like a pleasant surprise,
you caused me to wake up from my dreams and rise.
To the reality of having you in my life,
and I never knew reality could make me feel so alive.

Your charm and charisma fill me with joy;
your spontaneity makes me want to fly.
Your passionate love is all I ever need,
for you my love, make me feel alive.
You make me feel so alive.

Darling never question,
if this journey is worth it for me.
Because since the day you walked in my life,
I started breathing for the first time.

Even if there are bumps in the road,

Please remember, you will always be mine,
and I will be yours for a lifetime.
Cause you make me feel alive,
you make me feel so alive.

So let's continue on this path,
No questions asked.
No fear for tomorrow,
Cause if I die tomorrow,
I can say I lived this life feeling alive!

As long as you are by my side,
I swear I feel alive!
For you my love, make me feel alive.
You make me feel so alive.

Love is messy and imperfect but that’s what makes it worth it. Can you imagine a life without those crazy arguments? Can you imagine how boring love would be if it were perfect?

The lows help us realize how good we had it or make us grateful for what we do have in our lives. Even Cinderella had to go through struggles before her happily ever after.

“Smile when he makes you happy, yell when he makes you mad, and miss him when he’s not there. Love hard when there is love to be had, because perfect guys don’t exist, but there’s always one guy that is perfect for you.” - Bob Marley

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
