1. BLUE: My favorite song of all time. I can listen to it when I’m sad, happy, mad and it instantly puts me at peace. The song is about giving your all to someone hoping that they’ll love you back, or love you till death. Zayn’s voice in the song is heavenly and the lyrics are so soft and beautiful, which make it such a precious song and instantly puts you in your feelings.
2. No Small Talk: At the beginning of the semester I was on two dating apps, didn’t meet any of the guys I messaged cause they were either too eager to hook up or they couldn’t hold a decent conversation. This song is just a reminder to keep your head up high and keep your standards high especially when it comes to dating because you’re gonna be spending your money, your time, your energy on this other person and if they’re not here for the long haul then what’s the point.
3. The Need To Know: College is very rewarding but also very stressful. Having to keep up with internships, a social life, studying etc it becomes overwhelming pretty soon. For the most part, I'm a private person I'm not the type of person to show off their significant other on social media until I know it's official cause if you do it too soon then you're gonna have the whole village calling you up and no one has time for that.
4. Waves: I'm always late when it comes to listening to new albums by mainstream artists because I don't like the hype that comes with it unless it's Beyoncé. However, when I did get a chance to listen to the album I thought it was amazing. Once I heard Waves I knew it was going to be my favorite song off the album from the moment it goes into the 'TURN IT UP' to Chris Brown singing the chorus I knew this was it for me.
5. Father: I have a very complicated relationship with my father but as I’m growing older I’m starting to understand him more as a person and see why he reacts a certain way. I do wish our relationship was better and we could catch up on lost time but I’m trying to accept that this is who he is and move on with my life.
6. Not That Kinda Girl: This semester I pressured myself into thinking I was ready to lose my V-Card but in the long run I realized that that’s not something that needs to be priortized right now. On top of that, I'm very picky when it comes to guys and it’s been hard for me to find someone who I can connect with on an emotional and mental level so I’d rather just wait it out and see what happens.
7. Cranes In The Sky: The release of A Seat At The Table couldn't have happened at a better time. In the midst of the election, I believe that Solange was able to validate a lot of emotions and concerns that the black community has which stem from our history in this country. But what I like about Cranes In The Sky is that it shows her vulnerability. This is important because black women are stereotyped as the strong black woman, but people tend to forget that we have feelings and sometimes we want to cry but society doesn't really allow us to.
8. Don't Touch My Hair: Last year I had severe heat damage to the point where I would wash my hair and it was still bone straight. So throughout the year I kept putting my hair in protective styles whether it be box braids, crochet braids, twists, jumbo braids Senegalese twists. Once this semester came around I was relieved because my hair had finally gotten its curl back. There's a lot of time and effort that goes into my hair and I'm very proud of the journey I've taken with it. I would hate for someone to try and take that way from me.
9. Caroline: I'm always here to support my fellow Africans, Aminé's success with the song has been tremendous I don't doubt that were going to see more of him in the future. I've already seen him in concert twice and both times he blew me away. He's very humble and charismatic and naturally a great performer. The song is fun and upbeat, been blasting it the since the beginning of the summer till now. Shout out to Nathan Zed for posting this song on his Snapchat.
10. OOOUUU: The rise of female rappers is here! Young M.A is a rapper from Brooklyn, who is shaking up the game. Her presence in the hip hop world is important because she represents a more macho type of women who is open about her sexuality and her sexual escapades with other women. I love Young M.A's demeanor she oozes of confidence, her sound is raw and fresh, definitely different from what's been coming out recently so I'm excited to see what else she has in stored.
